I've got a brush (Simpsons Duke 3 in best) and some soaps (Cade, Tabac) for sale/trade if anyone is interested. Soaps are brand new, brush has been used 3 times and was a replacement for a shedder. But I prefer scrubbiness of the super 2 band over the pillowy softness of the best.

Very good brushes. I should've gone with a firmer one but the softness makes up for it.Originally posted by TorqueDog

In fact, here is a review all about it:

This is what it looks like after two sessions and in semi-bloom.

I think I'm gonna go for shaving cream because I can't build a good lather with soap using my silvertip. It never 'fluffs'; it's just a wet mess.
I rinse the silvertip in hot/lukewarm water then shake it to remove excess, get a little bit of soap then I try to lather on my face but... Nothing.
I found lathering on the face with shaving soap to be a royal pain in the arse, myself. I generally used a small shaving bowl. I'd fill it with hot water to heat the bowl, let the brush soak in the hot water, then shake the brush a bit, empty the bowl and start lathering.

try using a drier brush (squeeze and a couple of shakes) and load it with a lot of soap (swirl for 1 min) wet your face and then slowly add water to the brush to build the lather. I love tallow based soaps in Calgary's dry weather.

In calgarys hard water - you need a good scuttle to get a good lather from the glycerine based soaps...
Still have one for sale
I actually microwave the bowl with however much water I'll be using for the cream. I find I actually get a "warm" lather on.
Your method worked! Finally, I got fluff and it made my shave today more rewarding.Originally posted by lint

Hey guys I was thinking of getting this set with the Merkur HD 34c is this the best price around or does anyone else know a better place?

Can anyone recommend to a shaving newb where to buy a nice set for groomsmen gifts?
I'm going to be in Vegas for my wedding so I was going to hit up Art of Shaving but anything local in Calgary? Looking to buy two razors and some blades as gifts (under $200 each).
^ O'Connors carrys some stuff or you could check out www.rasagepoulin.com/ he is local and will allow you to pick up directly.
I just returned from Vegas and had gone to Art of Shaving myself. They have lots of great stuff, although it's definitely not what I'd consider inexpensive. However, after using their products for a while now I don't like the idea of doing without, lol.Originally posted by idriveabox

Prices from US retailers like West Coast Shaving or Bullgoose Shaving are really hard to compete with locally. A razor and blades should be well under $200. For $200 you can easily do razor, brush, blades and soap/cream.Originally posted by idriveabox

Quick question, if I go with a Merkur Progress do I have to buy Merkur blades? or can I get Feather, Derby etc?
no, any DE blade will work. I'd suggest getting sampler packs so they can try out different ones

I'm running the Derby Extra blades, and I am very happy with them. Got the 100 pack from ebay.
