Default I may have been scammed!

But I fixed it. Semi long story>

I took a rip down to calgary yesterday to look at a gooseneck trailer, seen here>

    http://calgary.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehi...AdIdZ118346476

It looked good, seemed to fit what I need and he was willing to move on the price. So I wrote him a cheque but he didnt want to release the trailer until the cheque cleared, so we agreed I would leave it there for a few weeks, until I'm off work again, and that worked for both of us.

So I asked for the registration as proof I bought it, and he handed it right over. I looked it over quickly and went to match the serial number on the trailer, and the first few letters were a match, then it got beat up and rusty to make out the rest, but I assumed it was fine.

So I was heading back to edm and stopped in reddeer to eat, and was looking over the registration when I noticed a couple of things wrong, the first being the name said PJ, not SWS and the yr said 01 (perhaps the yr was fine, since maybe it was made in 01, sold as an 02, I don't know I've never bought a trailer before)

So I try calling him and no answer. For a while... Doubt was growing so I turned around and went back to the yard it was in.. It was locked for the night, so I continued to call. No answer.

I then remember his address was on the old registration (but it was a few yrs old, so I didnt know if it was current, but I thought I would try it)

So it was about 10 at night at this point, and no lights on in the house, but I could see the glow of the TV, so I went to the door, and his wife answered, and he was out back in the hottub, and came to the door.. He was surprised to see me, and we talked it over, he made a couple of excuses, and fumbled with papers and didn't come up with anything for me. Crap about the registration being misprinted, to SWS being owned by PJ trailers, which isn't true... etc.

So I told him to give me my cheque back, until morning, and we'd go to the registry and bank and sort it all out..

So I was supposed to be back at work this morning, so I pushed that back and waited around down there., only for him to call first thing this morning with more excuses, which ended with him not wanting to sell to me, blah blah, he'd rather sell to a farmer who would just use it in a field..(where it wouldnt need to be registered???)..

Sooo, good thing is I got my cheque back.. But I'm still not sure about that trailer.. Part of it seems legit, but theres just too many odd things going on with it... and him.. I'm usually really good at reading people and situations.. but this has me just lost (I'm leaving out a lot of small details).

And now I'm back out at work for a few weeks, without a trailer, that I need by mid may to haul some stuff to NS.. But atleast I have my money..

I'd be willing to bet the trailer was permanently "borrowed" from someone. (cough hot hot cough). No other reason for bs excuses. Look at the news these days with all the trailers being stolen.

Well, good thing you had that gut feeling, or we'd be faced with yet another Beyonder getting scammed.

CSI can take the night off. For now.

May as well walk from it and be safe.
I'm sure there are some wicked deals to be had on trailers as well during these times.

I think this poster hit the nail on the head. there is no reason not to register a trailer unless it is shady (read: stolen). It might be worth it to notify the police that you suspect this to be a stolen trailer. maybe someone will get their trailer back.
