Do we need any special permit/license to drive a scooteR?

Hey so I'm looking to buy a scooter, just for the fun of it, and wanted to know if I needed any special permit or license to use it. I only have class 5.

Also is there any law against using it on normal roads??

Btw the one I am looking at is 50CC .

You only need a class 7 to drive a Scooter that is 50cc or less.

You cant go on anything over 60km an hour or something to that degree.. Buy a cheap motorcycle man, so much less of a a hassle.

Refresh my memory, but don't they have no turn signals? And you're not able to put insurance on them you can't legally ride them on the road?

yes you can get them insured and they do have turn signals.

The vehicle regulations in Alberta state that:
if the engine is greater than 50cc
OR
the maximum speed is greater than 50 km/h
OR
the machine empty weight is greater than 55 kgs
then it is considered as a motorcycle - and a class 6 licence is required.

There is no "Scooter" classification and all "vespa" type scooters (yamaha, honda, vespa, hyosung) all weigh more than 55 kgs.

Insurance / registration is required but insurance is cheap - 80/yr for new machine.

In BC the weight limit is higher - believe it is 80 kgs - so in BC you do not need a motorcycle licence.

Pocket bikes are illegal on the streets.

I think most people buy them off the internet or win them from the Stampede or what ever.

Pocket bikes aren't illegal they are just illegal to operate on anything other than private land. So in your yard/garage or on a farm in a field or something. Anywhere else and it's illegal. Once saw a kid in Grande Prairie get something like a 2000 dollar ticket for ripping one down the block by his house.

This is correct.

However, if you can't get your class 6 on a scooter, you suck so hard you should kill yourself*

I personally think it's insane that you can get your class 6 on a 50cc scooter then go buy a Hayabusa and ride it legally. We need a re-vamp of the licencing laws in this province.
