Default What oil do you guys use?

Hey guys. I have been reading a lot about the lower quality of Mobil 1 the last few months. I have been extremely loyal to M1 (5w30). I am seriously thinking of switching.

Can I get some ideas of what to switch to and where do you buy it?

    Thanks a lot.

I just load up when it goes on sale. Ive been using Castrol GTX conventional so far, might switch to synthetic during the winters. I figure as long as you change it regularly, then it should be fine. But then again I drive an average car.

Thanks bud. But I am referring to synthetic.

    German Castrol?
    Redline?
    Royal Purple?
    Amsoil?

And what about the higher mileage type oils that Mobil has created? Or is that a gimic?

    Cheers.

Castrol synthetic for me. It's what the dealer back in Edmonton used, so I stick with it.

Amsoil. The dealers won't use it because it's too expensive and you can run a longer interval with it

(sorry if it's not cool posting in here with no BMW but all my friends driving German cars that require synthetic go with this stuff, including the BMW guys)

I use amsoil and it is great stuff. The only place I know where to get it is at the Lube X on memorial and 52nd street NE. As long as your car has good rings this stuff will go 12,000km between oil changes no problem although I still do it every 8000km. Oil stays relatively clean the entire time and shows no sign at all of breakdown. My car idles smoother and got a wee bit better gas milage. Don't forget that oil is only half the battle. If you are willing to spend money on more exspensive synthetic oil then make sure you get a really good oil filter too. No point having good oil and a shitty filter.

Are you comparing your Honda's requirements to my BMW's requirements? The engines are different and the lube requirements are different. Amsoil may work for your car, and may be excellent oil, but is it good for my application? I know that Amsoil does not test for any LL specs.

let's not get into my car has a superior engine and therefore requires different oil discussions.

The reality is that if you're willing to go with 5000kms intervals just about any oil will work in a BMW or Honda as long as you respect the manufacturer's recommendations for conventional vs synthetic and the oil weight.

If you want premium oil for a premium price then buy either:

    Amsoil as mentioned
    Redline
    Royal Purple

With that said a Mobil 1 synthetic or Castrol synthetic will also do the trick quite well.

I am not saying that. I am posting in a BMW section and want to know what fellow BMW owners are currently using.

You simply asked what weight I used. You did not ask me what weight you should use. Use the weight in your users manual and I am sure amsoil and every other brand name oil makes that weight. You own a BMW not an F1 car. If you are worried about an oil not meeting your engine's standards then maybe you need to learn what those standards are before you go oil shopping. If you are really paranoid then just go to a BMW dealership and buy BMW oil for your car. Can't screw that up.

    Motul E-tech 8100 0w30 or 5w40 -> Excellent full Ester-based synthetic.

German Castrol 0w30 -> Good stuff as well.

Motul 300V 5w40 (for track days etc).
