Camcorder under 1k?

I'm in the market for a video camera. I'd spend up to a grand but if I can get what I want for ~$500 then all the better. Want something for basic use during holidays and such. Normally for use outdoors. Was hoping to get some feedback from camera experts on the board or people who made similar purchases.

I've done some research on my own. Is there a large noticeable difference between an HD camera and non-HD? It seems like the JVC Everio is the budget camera of choice but I'm open to various other models.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The HD to non-HD difference is huge should go for one if can afford it. There should some nice ones from Canon in the $800 range.

there are some good reviews on cnet.com

i think i'm going to go with either canon or sony.

HD for sure but still undecided about recording format.

i am leaning towards flash memory because the harddrive models have too many moving parts.
