Default HOLY CRAP!! Is roaming in the States really that expensive?!?

So I've been surfing the Rogers website, and found the price of making calls back home while on vacation. Is it really $1.70 a min to make a call from the States?!?! Anyone just come back from the States and can verify that for me? Seems a little excessive just to keep in contact with the family while away.

Yep... haven't you heard of anyone coming back from Vegas and getting surprised by a $1000 cell phone bill?

Happens all the time. At least you looked before hand (smart!). A tip though... if you have a BB, you can use BB messenger for free.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I've heard of crazy bills after a trip, I guess now I know how they happen. Guess it's gonna be quick calls, and nothing unless it's an emergency. And using wi-fi with the iPhone.

Are you sure about that? Would that not be classified under data roaming?

Yes you can pick them up while you are down there or you can buy one here before you go from Omegacell.

I successfully used mine without any charges. It's with rogers though and that was last year. Call and confirm before taking my advice of course.

I checked that out, and the phone needs to be unlocked. Now to figure out how to unlock an iPhone. Off to the iPhone thread.

BB messenger and BB email work on a seperate network, thus no roaming charges. Yes, $1.70/min confirmed when in US. Also, $0.40 per text while in the US. AT&T has the best pay as you go Sims, thats what I use on my unlocked phone. $0.10 per minute instead

Yea, thats where they get you man. Fees and fees on top of other crap they justify as a charge.

Just doing some looking around, and ultrasn0w isn't released for the iPhone yet, so I have no way to unlock it, and if I did, it's still $35 for a roaming SIM. I think I'm just gonna prepare for an extra $20-30 on the cell bill next month, so that we can keep up on the latest.

BB email and messenger are not free while roaming....who told you that? thats data roaming and it can be a ridiculous charge. mind you BB messenger is a very small amount of data transfer so the charges can be fairly small, but email can be huge charges depending on how many you get and what size they are.
