Default Hard drive problem - MBR partition

    Hey Beyond,

I'm setting up win7 on a brand new HDD.

I partitioned a single hard drive to 2 parts but after installing windows, I find that there's a 3rd partition.

Turns out it's a MBR type partition and windows won't let me use it.

    Can anyone provide a solution.

    TIA

I believe you can extend the second partition (downloads) to fill the empty space.

Alternately, you can create a new one.

i think you right click on that one, and choose create partition, and if it offers a choice, make it primary.

When I right click my other partitions (NTFS), the option for extending the volume is grayed out

Right clicking on the MBR partition only gives me properties. All other options are grayed out

^ sorry, I believe you have to create a new partition first.... then extend the second one to it

Update: Looks like the problem I have is that Windows 7 only sees up to 2TB of space on a single HDD if it's partitioned as MBR (I bought a 3TB hdd).

I changed it to GPT and set up my bios to boot up as UEFI but my windows disk still won't let me install the OS to the hard drive (says that it doesn't support that type of partition table).

Anyone have a solution? Seems so overly complicated and if I knew, I'd just stick with 2TB hard drives

    Okay.

So delete all the existing partitions and start from scratch.

Select the unpartitioned space and set the size of the partition that you want. You said it was 3TB, make the OS partition ~100GB. Windows will create a boot sector partition of 100MB. You should now see Partition 0, Partition 1, and unpartitioned space.

Select the partition you set to 100GB and click next.

Once the OS is loaded create the second partition in disk management.
