    Question tire chains.

    any experiences with them?

i am gona drive my car back to calgary next weekend to park it, and i have a feeling that my summers wont be too good at highway speeds in these sorts of conditions. when there is any snow/ice on the roads at all i have almost no grip at all and even on the dry i can spin/lock the tires quite easily.

i dont want to buy winter tires just to make the trip back home, so i was thinking about chaining up. i am worried about the fact that i do occasionally rub (and that would be bad news with chains on) and i am wondering bad chained up tires are with dry pavement.

Cant you use chains out of the city? Just paint them black so know one will see. No point buying winter tires if you are gonna store it. Why dont you get it towed?

This might be a little extreme but you might want to get your car sent down by Train. We had a contest at work for our customers in which we gave a way a free car. The guy who won lived in Winnipeg and had a flight booked home. He stuck it on the train for ~$300. It might be worth while for you to look in to it.

Chains are wonderful for traction when going slow.

Chains are not wonderful at highway speed.

When I was 12 my dad bought a 100 buck beater, drove it to a good friends farm and then put chains on it. They let me drive it all over the farm all winter. One day one of the chains came off, on the far side of the farm, ripped a hole in the rear passenger fenderwell and proceeded to shred the seat on the passenger side. There were metal bits, springs, batting, stuffing, mud, snow, straw and manure flying about all over the place inside the car. It was fun then, but now I won't use chains any longer than it would take to get unstuck.

For the price of shipping or towing you can buy a pretty good set of tires. Also by next weekend there is a good chance most of this snow will be gone anyway.
