3GS Jailbreak is here

I make it ra1n Yes, this is what you've all been waiting for. A jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS. And it's awesome. To get started right now, go to purplera1n.com. Download it. Make sure you have windows(but not 7), the latest iTunes installed, and an iPhone 3GS with 3.0 firmware. Connect your iPhone normally. Click "make it ra1n". Wait. On bootup, run Freeze, the purplera1n installer app. Hopefully you'll figure out what to do from there. Best tutorial gets linked to from purplera1n site. This tool is beta. Make sure to have everything backed up before running. Also if Cydia doesn't show up after running Freeze, reboot. If you need help email purplera1n.support at gmail and attach your purplera1n.log file. Or call the purplera1n support hotline @ (650) 265-1210 Mac version is coming shortly. Normally I don't make tools for the general public, and rather wait for the dev team to do it. But guys, whats up with waiting until 3.1? That isn't how the game is played. We release, Apple fixes, we find new holes. It isn't worth waiting because you might have the "last" hole in the iPhone. What last hole...this isn't golf. I'll find a new one next week. Also your purplera1nyday files ensure that you can always get back to a jailbroken state, so if you have it it's just a matter of tools. Props to chronic dev for their help, and to kroo for writing v2 of Freeze. And props to Saurik for making an awesome package set. Note the binary size of purplera1n, it's smaller than C++ hello world. No 20MB thing that needs to be torrented. And no IPSW to download. This is how jailbreak should be!

Can anyone verify? I've been following purple rain, but I was skeptical on him releasing a jailbreak before the dev team. Looks like him and some help from chronic dev have done it.

I'd test it out, but I still haven't got my 3gs yet in the mail

Things I've found so far
1. Doesn't work with 64-bit windows (or at least 64-bit vista)
2. NEEDS latest version of iTunes (for 3gs drivers)

Tried 2x, hasn't worked either time. Got stuck in recovery mode, had to restore. 3rd time's the charm? Maybe I'll try again today.

Theres alot of people having issues with this jailbreak, winterboard does not work on it yet swell.

all the fools who are too scared to do this are missing so much!!! completely customize the look of your iphone, and if you dont know how to do it.. ill do it for $50

yeah if you know how to use cydia to its full potential and read up on blogs/forums etc you'll never want to go back to 'oem'. even my 2g jailbroken had video record/ cut copy etc.

i havent checked in a while but 3.0 has been jail broken right? i mean for older models?

p.s: i'll do it for $20 lol, anyone who played oregon trail in elementary could do it lol

the redsnow jailbreak is a lot easier than this purplerain jailbreak.

This is true, but no where NEAR the qaulity and integration that the OEM 3.0 software gives you.

The reason why the 3G didn't have a video camera was the crappy physical camera. Didn't cut it. Cycorder was absolute crap for taking videos too (the jailbreak).

Cut/copy/paste was a complete hack too. It barely worked.

And landscape keyboard blows away the crappy text programs that made you have to buy them or you had to wait 30 seconds for each text to see.

3.0 FTW and I'm pretty sure I won't jailbreak, 3.0 gives you everything that jailbreak did for 2.2

How is it even hard?? you download it, plug in your phono, click make it rain, then isntall cydia through freeze.. restart your phone then bam, cydia...

Did you guys go through the process of getting your phones ECID files prior to jailbreaking?

I figured it was worth it so I did that but I'm torn on whether or not to jailbreak due to people having issues "un-jailbreaking" if they need to. It doesn't seem like the settings are not always reverting to OEM even when restoring. Anyone dealt with this?

no I did not. what does it matter anyways? it's a computer... you can do anything to it. that's why I did it.... I might actually pay for an app and get more minutes for this fake caller id app... priceless

the ECID is a safeguard against future firmware updates as the exploits will most likely be closed by Apple......might need it or might not (if they, ie dev team, etc. crack the newer firmware)

Talking about settings, are you setting it up as a new phone or restoring from backup? If u dont set it up as a new phone, the preference files from the jailbroken state will stay there, sometimes creating problems.....

^^ how did you do that? redsn0w wont recognize my 3.0.1 file and I can't find my old 3.0 file, i think it got replaced.
