    -----------------------------------------------------------------
CITYBEAT - CITY OF CALGARY PRESS RELEASE
    -----------------------------------------------------------------

The Calgary Police Service is investigating the death of a
dog following an incident in Lake Bonavista Sunday evening.

At approximately 8:45 p.m., on Sunday, July 5, 2009, police
were called to the 12000 block of Lake Waterton Way S.E., for
a complaint of a dog that had been kicked and subsequently
    died.

Anyone who may have witnessed the actual incident is asked to
    call District 8 at 403-567-6800.

The owners have told investigators that they were entering
their home when their dog ran across the road and around a
corner toward a man who was walking his dog.

As they rounded the corner after their dog, they saw the
animal lying on the ground. It died moments later.

Early Tuesday morning, investigators were advised by an off
-duty Calgary Police Service officer who indicated he was
involved in this incident and took action to protect his dog,
who was being attacked by the other dog. He is co-operating
    fully with this investigation.

The CPS is investigating this incident with assistance from
the Calgary Humane Society and Calgary Animal and Bylaw
Services, and the Crown Prosecutor's Office.

Acting Deputy Chief Trevor Daroux will be available to speak
to this issue today, Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at 3 p.m. This
availability will take place on the third floor of the Andrew
    Davison Building, 133 6 Ave. S.E.

RELEASED BY THE PUBLIC AFFAIRS/MEDIA RELATIONS UNIT FOR
    DISTRICT 8 GIU.

Wonder what kind of dog it was? If he was protecting his dog from a toy poodle thing won't look too good.

Does it matter if it was an off duty cop? I had a dog take a snap at my dog, I gave it a boot to the face. Mind you that was my min pin vs a german shepard...

And the problem is what exactly?

I would have done the same to protect either myself or my own dog.

After it happened he should have gone and kicked the dead dogs owners.... they're the ones to blame.

I don't see any issue here unless the cop had a Pit Bull and it was a poodle coming around the corner.

Agreed that the owners should have had control over the dog... but why did he wait two days to come forward?

Becasue cops are smart enough to talk to their lawyers and union reps before speaking up?

ummm can you say power tripping? You'd have to boot a big dog pretty hard to kill it. If it was a little dog I'm pretty sure a boot isn't even necessary.

It was on the news last nite... It was a Golden Retriever or Lab that got away from the owners. They said that they were playing with it out front, let it off its leash to go inside, the dog saw the other dog across the road and ran to play with it. Thats when the guy started kicking it.

I am trying to find the link on global... but it isnt there anymore....

Wow.. that's definately not a vicious dog, repeated kicking is a little overboard. I hope justice is served.

While most retrievers and labs certainly aren't vicious, don't think they couldn't kill you or your dog if they tried to. My Golden weighs over 70 pounds and he's not fat at all. Just well built. He certainly doesn't have the temperment to attack anyone, but if my dog got his jaws around your arm or neck (or your dog), he could easily rip apart your arm or kill you.

A big dog is a big dog, and if one came at my dog, I'd bootfuck it too. Take better care of your pets and this wouldn't happen.

Where does it say anything about repeated kicking?

It could have been just one shot that landed badly (for the dog).

I myself would kick ANY dog running full tilt towards my own, if it were off leash and owners no where in sight (as was this case). You have to assume it's not under anyones command, and will attack.

Otherwise if the two dogs fought, and the dog still died, the owners would be demanding his be put down. Good on him for saving it's life.

You don't start kicking something if it's just once.

I think you can tell if an agressive dog is charging at you to kill you or your dog. My cousin's Golden Retriever is 90lbs and just runs around with his stupid tongue hanging out. vs. my dog running after you with his teeth showing and growling.

This is starting to sound more like a boot stomping of a dog that was already down. vs protecting himself or his dog

Seriously guys, it says this NO WHERE. The owners rounded the corner and saw their dog on the ground already, they never saw the kicking. No other witness's have come forward at all.

It could have been a one shot deal.

Two dogs including a lab ran towards my dog (puppie) at the time at the park with no owners in site. I thought they were going to attack my dog but they just started jumping around and playing. Who knows though, messed up situation.
