Default Car Allowance Rebate System - Will we see something like this in Canada?

Will Canada introduce some form of "Cash for Clunkers" program similar to the one in the US?
Information about the American program can be found here:

What are your thoughts on these programs?
Do they actually help the environment, the economy or the car makers?

Economy and car makers, under the guise of environmental movement.

I rather see govnernment slap like another 100% on gas tax so it'll make financial sense to downsize instead of wasting tax money for gas wasters to buy new cars.

High prices will induce conservation if that's the final goal.

So what will the government do with all the traded cars? Can't really scrap 'em unless the cars are worth practically nothing.

I think the idea is that they give the car to a scrap dealer and it's recycled. They don't want you re-selling the car, because then it'll just end up back on the road polluting again.

The whole point really is to get money into government coffers. This really has nothing to do with the environment. Generally, the cost of maintaining your car < cost of buying a new car = more tax revenue. That pretty much sums it up.

I didn't read the whole article in the link, but it sounds like what they do here in BC. They give you $2000 (I think thats the amount) for any car older than 15 yrs or something.

Ok so I'm not sure on the date of manufacture, or the amount they give you, but they do it here lol.

The way that people drive has a lot to do with the "Realistic" fuel economy that they will actually get.
The EPA is the government agency that tests an determines the standards & Official Fuel Economy Ratings that are used in this program.

We used to have something similar here. They gave you $1000 towards a GM vehicle, up to $500 towards a new bicycle (they paid 50% up to $500), or a bus pass for a year.

It was through the "Car Heaven" program, which backed out of Alberta a few years back, and by the looks of their website, have scaled back all the goodies as well. Now it's just like the kidney foundation, $50 tax receipt.

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.
