Default Henry Surtees dies in F2 race today

    Video of the accident.

Wheel comes off, hits him straight on in the head, knocking him out (and probably killing him) instantly. Straight on into the tire barrier. So sad that his dad survived probably the most dangerous era of F1 and motorcycle racing, and he gets killed at age 18 in such an innocent looking accident.

    RIP.

How fast would you estimate he was going when the tire hit his face?

Wow, how often does another driver perish without their vehicle physically touching anything? Talk about a fluke. Poor guy, RIP.

    wow
thats sad, just watched the video.. looks so harmless, i didnt even catch it the first time. Dont they have "tire restraints" so that this kind of thing doesnt happen?

They use tire tethers in Formula 1, but I have no idea about F2.

They have them in F2 as well, but they do fail. Even in F1 they fail when impact is big enough.

Telemetry shows impact was at 200km/h!

He died instantly the tire hit from massive head and neck injuries. His foot was still on the gas when the car was stopped after crashing straight into the tire barriers. Brutal.

edit - video updated with working one.

Very tragic, and that's a genuine freak accident - you cannot make racing 100% safe.

When you're meant to go it just happens, what are the chances of that tire hitting him dead on the head in that open of an area.

    RIP.

Poor kid, it seems he did not die on the spot. http://www.flagworld.com/news/?p=20883

    "
Henry was driving between Westfield and Sheene corner when he was struck on the head by a wheel and tyre from another car which had hit the tyre wall ahead of him just before. Henry was immediately knocked unconscious and his car failed to negotiate the following Sheene corner and collided with the barriers.

The race was red flagged and the medical team were with Henry as soon as possible. He was removed from the car, stabilised and taken to the medical centre where the medical team prepared him for transfer to the Royal London hospital, the regional trauma centre, by helicopter[...]"

That was the initial report. Later reports say even though there was a faint irregular heartbeat when the doctors attended to him, he was long gone.

Jesus... I had to rewatch it twice just to see it. You would never think of a driver getting killed in something like that.
