    Default Rust Restoration

    Hey Guys,

I just bought a old benz that i want to restore, and i was wondering if anyone had any good websites that outlines what is needed and the process of fixing the rust. Its not a lot of rust, mainly surface, but i thought it would give me something to do over the winter. Thanks for any help

Here are some pics of the rust

    1-take a grinder
    2-grind the shit down
3-fill with body filler AKA bondo
    4-sand very smooth (dry)
5-sand more but wet this time
    6-clean with body cleaner
    7-primer it
    9-wet sand again
    10-paint

Go pick up a fiberglass repair kit from walmart or cdn tire. Its pretty easy to do. Grind it right down or even cut it out if you can. Build up layers of fiberglass and then do some good sanding. You might need a bit of filler if the fiberglass doesnt turn out smooth enough

Cut the area out with rust, weld a replacement sheet of metal back in place. Using bondo is probably not the best idea.

Your going to use bondo anyways for the seems between the metal, unless there's some other kind of filler i dont know about

more bondo = more chance of cracking

A little bit of filler in the seems is a lot better than a great big blob.
Use plasma cutter, weld in new peice....best way to go

there are various ways to fix your problem.
First determine FOR SURE if it is surface rust.
if it turns out to be surface rust, if you have access to a sand blaster you could spot blast the area to remaove All rust. If you only have access to a grinder grind the area as best as possible(you might not be able to remove all rust from area) then try and feather the area out with a coarse grit sand paper. if bondo is needed, use it. it is a common miconseption that bondo will always crack. If used properly and no thicker than 1/8" you will be fine. As for welding in a new panel bevery careful not to warp the metal as it is only 22 gauge. tack weld only and SPREAD them out. and once excess metal has been ground down use some shortstrand fiberglass bondo. the short strand flexes more than just the plastic filler alone thus less chance of cracking. also another quick tidbit bondo is intended for use on bare metal(mechanical bond not chemical) so make sure where you put bondo is bare metal. if you have some more questions let me know there is much more to some of it than I have said. good luck

^^^ you should weld the whole seam not just tack weld... the person who tried to fix the rust in my wheel wells before me did this and the rust came right back...

You weld the whole panel using tack welds so you do nor get heat warpage thats all, and so you don't end up chasing a hole.

weld the whole seam and you'll warp the panel...
maybe you should try doing it yourself before you tell people how to do it.

^^ well i'm just telling you what happened to my car. tack welds and it rusted through again. my friend that does my body work told me the proper procedure that he used. he seam welded it but did it in small sections so that the heat would not cause the panel to warp. but if you don't believe me go ahead and tack weld and don't complain to me when the rust comes back.
