Default ontario street race: Mini Cooper vs. Prelude - 200km/h in 50 zone

4 times over the speed limit
Pair charged in 200 km/h race

    By CHRIS DOUCETTE, SUN MEDIA

    Last Updated: 18th July 2009, 4:08am

A mid-1990s Honda Prelude SR-V (above) and a special John Cooper Edition Mini Cooper, both of which were impounded and stored at a yard in Etobicoke. Police say the two cars were involved in a race down Martin Grove Rd. at speeds up to 200 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. (Ernest Doroszuk, Sun Media photos) Two young men face street-racing charges after they were nabbed driving side by side at an unbelievably reckless 150 km/h over the posted speed limit on a Rexdale street, police say.

The pair of leadfoots were heading into the city from Woodbridge around 11:30 p.m. Thursday, heading south on Martin Grove Rd. past Steeles Ave. W., when they were clocked at an astonishing 200 km/h in a 50 km/h zone, Toronto Police said.

"When I heard about this my eyes nearly popped out of my head," Traffic Services Sgt. Tim Burrows said yesterday. "It's four times the posted speed limit and they were coming into a residential area."

The veteran cop, who thought he had seen it all when it came to speeders, said it was a good thing the two drivers were stopped because they could have caused untold carnage travelling at such speeds.

He said Const. Sue Fisher, of 23 Division's Traffic Unit, was stopped in an unmarked cruiser in the northbound lanes of Martin Grove, just south of Steeles, when she spotted the two cars flying toward her.

The quick-thinking officer, whose vehicle was equipped with mobile radar, activated it and got a reading of 200 km/h as the new red Mini Cooper and the purple Honda Prelude SR-V whizzed by.

"They didn't even realize they were passing a police car," Burrows said.

Fisher immediately spun her unmarked car around to give chase and caught up to the speedsters soon after, he said. One of the drivers was stopped at a red light and the other, who had apparently made it through the intersection before the light changed, pulled a U-turn and drove back north on Martin Grove.

"The two cars basically came right to her," Burrows said. "It was a combination of good police work and good luck."

The drivers, 20 and 21, said they weren't racing and denied knowing each other.

"One of them is from the Netherlands and acted surprised to learn he was not allowed to drive like that in Ontario," Burrows said.

Holland actually has speed limits similar to Ontario and even highways there have a maximum of 120 km/h.

Burrows said Traffic Services was called in to investigate because of the excessive speed involved.

He shudders to think what might have happened to other motorists and any pedestrians had either of the drivers been forced to make a sudden manoeuvre at 200 km/h.

Under ideal conditions, with full braking, Burrows said reconstructionists estimate it takes more than two football fields and about 71/2 seconds to bring a car to a stop.

"After five seconds of 100% braking, you would still be going about 70 km/h," he explained. "And unless you're using high-performance tires, your tires would most likely explode if you slammed on your brakes at that speed.

"At the very least, the tires would most likely keep spinning even though the rims are stopped."

The two drivers, whose names were not released, have had their licences suspended for seven days.

"They also both had to call their older brothers and explain their cars were being impounded," Burrows said, adding neither actually owns the car they were driving.

but yeah they get to watch their cars get crushed.. sucks for the mini as its a john cooper special

Its wasn't their cars - do they still get crushed??

If someone steals a car and goes 200 in a 50 zone, does that car get crushed?

They didn't even know they passed a cop. The article says one guy was caught at a red light and the other guy, who made it past the red light, had made a u-turn and was heading back towards the cop.
"One of them is from the Netherlands and acted surprised to learn he was not allowed to drive like that in Ontario," Burrows said.
    This part is pretty funny.

    JCW FTW!

And yeah, that kind of speed in a 50 zone is stupid. The road is probably crap, making it extra difficult to control your car.

    not really BS.

lock up your tires going that fast, and the supoer fast heat buildup, and the amount of rubber being left on the road would cause tire failure.

and with some high performance tires, they have enough grip that under hard breaking the bead can slip and the tire rotates around a stopped rim.

Ok im not saying that it was ok what they did. It was dumb, BUT the people who write this shit are idiots.

Im sorry but I have braked many times doing 200km and what is writen here is a bunch of BS. The JCW Mini does 120km-0 in 210ft. So with that you could say it does 200km-0 in 300ft roughly.

A CFL field is 450 ft. (I might be wrong)

Like I said im not saying it was ok to do it, im just saying that they tend to go overboard on what they say.

I can see what might happen with a lot of heat generation. I still think the bead breaking is pretty far-fetched...

The tires could burst on either of the cars if they were pretty crappy. However, I am pretty sure the MCS JCW comes with some pretty decent stock rubber, never mind what they probably put on them.

You won't be able to lock up at 200km/h unless you have a retardedly huge big brake kit, or running on winter tires. Besides, ABS kicks in anyways probably closer to 100km/h.

Of course the exageration factor is there, kinda like drug busts and valuation of the bust.

Double the speed does NOT result in double the braking distance.

Kinetic energy varies with the square of the velocity, so 2x the speed = 4x the energy.

So at 200km/hr, your stopping distance will be ~2.77x that of you going at 120km/hr... or ~585ft (probably a bit less cause drag and misc frictional losses at 200km/hr will factor in as well). You also have to take into account the condition of the road... this ain't tarmac, if it's a bumpy city street you won't have constant weight applied to the tires. Also, condition of the brakes, tires, and efficiency of the brakes as they start overheating and warping.

Given real world conditions, 2 football fields doesn't seem unreasonable.

    not entirely too far fetched.

Ever watch top fuel funny cars and the like, this is an extreme example, but ever watch the rotational flex of the sidewall at launch? they have to bolt those tires in place onto the rim to stop the rim from spinning inside the tire.

I am sure the same could be accomplished under ideal breaking with crap rubber and rims and those kind of speeds.

remember as well, that the cop is quoting numbers from a generic test, he is not stating that that particular cooper takes those numbers to slow down and stop.
