Default Calgary's first Walmart Supercenter to open in Deerfoor Meadows

this is old news apparently, but i jkust saw it today. finally, a supercenter in Calgary - it's about fucking time. we've had these in the states for oh, what, 15 years? i couldn't believe it when i moved to calgary and they didn't have them. now I only need to visit one store for all my shopping needs haah!

say goodbye to superstore, especially the deerfoot meadows location.

    Mammoth Wal-Mart coming to Calgary
Grocery Competition Heats Up; Super-sized store set for southeast

CALGARY - Retail giant Wal-Mart is planning its first Supercentre format for Calgary at the Deerfoot Meadows shopping complex.

An official with the company confirmed Monday the store will be about 185,000 square feet and will include a full grocery component. Construction will start soon, with a planned opening in early 2010. This will be the ninth Wal-Mart in Calgary.

"It is what we have been trying to do in many markets -- introduce a modern format Wal-Mart that is more relevant to today's customer," said Kevin Groh, director of corporate affairs for Wal-Mart Canada.

"What we know is that customers want one-stop shopping and they want the best prices, and to us that means they want Wal-Mart Supercentres. So we're in the process in various markets of bringing the modern format Supercentre in with new stores, but also by expanding or renovating existing stores. We do plan to open or expand in various locations to bring our modern store to Calgary.

"The first step will be Deerfoot Meadows."

The Deerfoot Meadows shopping complex is west of Deerfoot Trail and south of Glenmore Trail.

Groh said Wal-Mart will join other retailers there in a regional hub.

According to the City of Calgary's latest building permit data, the estimated construction value for the Wal-Mart Supercentre, at 7979 11th St. S. E., is $10.96 million.

"The Deerfoot Meadows Wal-Mart Supercentre will be a significant and important component in the evolution of the Meadows as a dominant retail centre,"said Michael Kehoe, an Alberta-based retail specialist with Fairfield Commercial Real Estate Inc.

"The Supercentre concept, with its gorilla-sized retail footprint and one-stop shopping advantage, will be an instant success with consumers across the greater Calgary region."

Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart has eight stores in Calgary. Groh said those eight serve more than one million customers each month.

"We're doing a brisk business in the existing stores and we think we can extend that out to at least this additional location and by improving some of our other locations. So we'll be generally looking at the market with an eye to new, modern stores or modernizing existing stores," said Groh.

"What we see is that more and more there's a preference to one-stop shopping. And people with busy lives, they're looking to check more items off their list in one spot. And so both in Alberta and in other provinces where we've introduced the Supercentre, it's been a very successful format."

He said the company has 50 stores in Alberta with 22 of them Supercentres. A typical Supercentre format is about one-third bigger than a regular Wal-Mart.

In southern Alberta, the Supercentre format can be found in Airdrie, Olds, two in Lethbridge, Okotoks, Sylvan Lake and Pincher Creek.

Groh said the company has 312 stores across the country with 56 of them in the Supercentre format.

Wal-Mart's plan is to have 82 Supercentres in Canada by early next year through construction of new stores and expansion of existing ones.

Passed by the Deerfoot Mall location today and thought to myself that they will be expanding the existing walmart into a supercenter since some construction is already on its way.

Whats gonna happen to the Walmart on Southland and Macleod...i assume they are gonna close it down?!

^^hopefully, that place is an absolute shithole. i live right by there and go there all the time, i don't think it's been renovated since like 1983. the ghetto sign on the front still reads "WAL-MART," but the company changed the name to Walmart and got a new logo at least a couple of years ago now.

You are taking your life in your own hands if you buy fresh food from an Walmart (or Superstore). I am in this industry and get to see behind the scenes of nearly all the stores.

The place will be crazy as hell. Regular Wal-Mart shopping involves crying babies, rednecks, kids running around at 100 km/h smashing into shit, long line ups, etc etc.

Add a grocery store onto Wal-Mart....I can only picture total chaos.

Cue the UFCW attempting to unionize it, followed by the entire population chasing the union out of the city with torches.

Maybe not, Superstore on Macleod and (close to) Southland is still open, even though the Deerfoot Meadows one is operating.

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

That map Nonlinear posted is almost identical to what the Lethbridge supercenter looks like. It should have both a Timmies and a McDonalds inside though as the supercenter here does.

It isnt open 24 hours however (at least in Lethbridge), just until 11. They also do not sell alcohol.

Their fresh produce and meat looks VERY sketch however. You can tell meat has thawed and been refrozen all over the place. Some vegtables I looked at were already begining to rot. Ive also noticed for things like bread/etc ... it will be for sale on the 7th and its best before date is the 9th... everything is close to its exparation dates. For staple goods/toiletries/etc they have better selection than Superstore though.

The aisles are huge so its pretty hard to smash into each other and they have many automated self checkouts that intimidate all the old people/fobs, so you can actually check out really fast.

I find the meat to be very good, from the Airdrie store anyway.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll make sure to avoid it like the plague.

i haven't really bought any meat there before, but we did buy some italian sausages at the cochrane location once, and they were seriously some of the best sausages we've ever had. pure dense meat, no chucks of fat and no fillers. we bought some at sobey's (compliments brand) for comparison, and there was no contest. not sure about the rest of the meat, however.

i'm just excited for the vast aisles of product diversity, which is unfortunately sorely lacking in the calgarian/canadian market.

Cochrane, Ontario?? No Walmart here and it's a sore spot for most locals because they are probably building one next year.
