    Default Laptop Recommendations

Hey need some help deciding what kind of a laptop to get. I will be using it for School (university communications major), personal use obviously, and some work on adobe master collection.

Indifferent if i get a windows or a mac, currently running windows 7 RC its not bad. What do you guys think is Mac a better option for me?

    Thanks

No it is not a better option, unless you want to spend a ton of money for no gain.

From the sounds of it you don't need much and any laptop on the market right now will do it all for you.

I would personally recommend a Toshiba since they have in-town service, HP you have to send away east if you have issues. I am on a 4 year old Toshiba and it does all I need to do without issues. Been rock solid and I can see it lasting for another 4 years since it is already powerful enough to play MKV files and the other functionality, like browsing the net, work processing and stuff it is plenty fast for. Running Windows 7 RTM without any hickups at all.

I would recommend a Core2 based processor on your laptop (used in most laptops and in apple too)

If you want the nicest hardware...

I'd say hit up a nice Lenovo... I've always been a hardcore IBM user, and surprisingly enough when Lenovo bought the company the laptops still rock!

What he said is true! I love IBM laptops, best ever made. I just wan't sure if Lenovo still sells these locally (not the cheap versions, the ones that look like old IBMs are what you want) since I haven't been laptop shopping in a long time

Here's what I've learned from the few laptops I've owned:

    - don't buy anything from HP, the hardware and support is terrible.
    - Smaller screen is better. I had a 17 inch laptop and now have a 15 inch but would still prefer a 12 inch because it's more portable. I got a desktop if I want to use a big screen.
    - Dell laptops are great. They look good, perform good but the service is terrible. Just as bad as HP.
    - IBM (Lenovo now) are the toughest, unbreakable, invincible workhorses ever built. I'm pretty sure you could bury one in the sand and it would still work.
    - EEE PC are very interesting and great if it's not something you'll be using for more than an hour at a time.

Dell laptops have long been my favorite for PC. Lenovo makes good laptops too but they have that awful finger mousepad in the middle of the keyboard that always gets in the way.

A PC and mac will essentially be the exact same for you for school purposes.

Just a few responses to other people's posts...

Not saying your wrong, but just wanted to address some things...

To the dude that said HP support and service sucks... The company I own is a "HP Business Partner"... One of our flagship products is HP equipment. One of the KEY reasons I sell this hardware is because of their support. Warranty service (even though they are hard to understand sometimes) are AMAZING as long as you treat them like normal people. I have called them for workstations/laptops a few times, but at the same time I could be a bit wrong because 95% of my calls are for Servers, Expensive Network switches, mostly corporate hardware.

    BUT

At the same time, my company is also a Lenovo authorized partner. One thing I have noticed since Lenovo purchased a portion of IBM is that the service has changed (for the better). With my encounters, upon calling the number you immediately get a service representative (who speaks English and is in North America) who are ALSO very helpful). And they are SUPER fast at looking up information.

Business laptops for general work employees = HP or Lenovo depending on pricing

Personal laptops, or laptops for corporate execs = Lenovo

(P.S. I'm writing this post on a Lenovo X61 fully loaded)
