Something with a 4 cylinder is a safe bet.

At the moment since i need a car soon and that is affordable i will take anything thats in good condition. but i really like older cars(basically anything from the 70s...yes i even like gremlins :P) but since i dont know anything about cars mechanically and have a smallish price range that is kinda out of the picture

Forget anything from the 70's and 80's unless you want to spend big bucks fixing it up
Look for something no one else wants. ie I bought a 92 Ford Escort for $400. put about $100 repairing a couple of things. Drove it for about a month that I needed it, sold it for $500. The guy uses it everyday. It isn't pretty and it is rusty but it runs.
Ford Escort, Topaz, GM Cavalier, Sunfire cheap and cheap parts.
    Late 90's about $1000.
Honda same vintage will be $3000! or more.

A 4 cyl under 2L anyways. My 2001 Prelude and Lancer Sportback are both 4 cyl, but over 2L. The mileage on both of them suck.

85-89 toyota MR2.... very fun car and very cheap on fuel wish i still had mine! back in the days of 49.9 fuel $15 would get me a touch over 400KM... thats still under $30/fill today!!

haha...back then i'd give the cashier a 20, get a pack of smokes and fill er up... now? lol!

VW's are epic in the reliability and gas mileage fields. My 98 Jetta is not running so great any more, it's getting pretty old but I still get a guarunteed 600 to the 54L tank.

first of all, what's your price range and what's the ideal purpose of the car? you just trying to get from point a to point b. and do you have a preference between auto/manual?

Since when was a Prelude good on gas? I owned 2 Preludes and they weren't exactly good on gas. That and the fact that it only takes premium. The rest of your list seems to be on the ball though, maybe the accord might be a maybe.

For a first car you can't really go wrong with a Civic.

Saturn SL's/IONs are great first cars. Cheap on gas, reliable and dent proof doors! haha

It would probably help if you said what kind of budget you are working with.

my DA9 teg winter beater gets 470-500ish per tank, however 80% of my work drive is highway or 80km/h + speed limits, coincidentally on a side note i gained an extra 50-75km/tank when shell introduced that nitrogen enriched gas ( or maybe it was just me cracked out)
