2hours there and 2 back, 4hrs a day on the road. Even in todays hard economy with so many people unemployed and getting laid off. Could any of you do it? Or would? Pay isn't great, 22k a year.

They pay the mileage, you just have to pay $60 each month in admin fees for the head office to keep track of mileage and setting up an your account for your company gas and they cover the gas.

Can you bill the 4 hours to the company and get paid for it? if not, no. The lost value in the amount of mileage your vehicle would accrue combined with the costs of commuting would not make it worthwhile.

Think of the total travel costs, if you get 600k a tank, you would be filling up every second day.. so $70 every two days or twice a week $140x4= $560/Month x 12 months= $6,720

    $22,000 - 6720 =15,280

So all said and done you are travelling 4 hours per day to earn 15,280 and your paying taxes on the money you're spending to get to work.

What are you thinking? Welfare is more profitable for you.

    No
That's $83 a day with you paying $25 daily in gas (assume 4hr on highway in a Civic) and basically you are getting paid < $4/hr after you factor in wear and tear of the car and taxes.

I would if you can find accommodation closer

I think finding a McD or Starbucks job in town would be better than this.

And that's just gas... not including the value of your own time.

I definitely wouldn't but I remember listening to a podcast a while ago where they were searching for people with the longest commutes...a lot of people in California because of the housing/job situation were driving anywhere from 3-5 hours each way which is ridiculous but that's what they had to do to keep their jobs or house. I would assume they were making more than 22k

And additional wear n' tear on the vehicle.

The real question is, why the fuck would you drive that far to make ~$10.50/hr?

No way - because I used to do it many years ago. Nose to tail stop and go for the most part (and in a standard)

no.. that's long ass drive. for me to do that, I would need to work 12 hours a day, getting paid to travel, and was getting paid $100 a day for my vehicle. Other then that, it's not worth it, if you really wanted the job you should move haha...
but for 10 bucks an hour I don't think I would do much for my employer.

What an awful way to live... 20minutes would be the max I'd ever do but I grew up in a small town so the 30min+ commutes sound crazy to me.
Looking for a new VW? How about a used vehicle? We are Central Albertas #1 source for pre-owned vehicles

I know many people who work downtown and spend 2-2.5hrs a day, 5 days a week commuting to and from work in rush hour and I don't know how they do it. It just seems like spending that much time on the road each day is such a waste of time.

Not for $22k. No way in hell. You can get a job as a warehouse labourer in town starting at $35k.

    Not worth it.

I knew a guy who drove from Edmonton to Whitecourt everyday for his job. The drive was probably ok in the summertime but the winter drive would suck.

I drive 30 minutes to work and an hour home everyday... Mind yu i make just a little more then $22k/year hahah. Traffic on the way home is just ridiculous... even if i get off earlier then normal, i just run into school traffic now rather then work trarffic.

Over an hour each way is typical for suburban people working in downtown Toronto. Bad traffic = 2 hours.

Over a 25-30 year career you will be spending YEARS of your life commuting to work. Not exactly how I want to live, but you do what you gotta do.

I personally enjoy living downtown and close to work.

A lot of people in McMurray average 2-4 hours travel per day, factor in a 12 hour shift, and most are making it home just in time to sleep.

Camps suck, but you can't beat the commute.

/edit: They are also doing a lot more than 22k / year and get 7 off in exchange.

+1 for vancouver and toronto having this normal.

Driving/Skytrain to my office in Burnaby just off Edmonds train station used to take me over 2 hours.

OP make them pay you more money, also it sounds like BS that they are charging you $60.00 a month to do your expenses.
