Buying a 2009 Hyundai Elantra

Hello everyone,

I live in Calgary. I am thinking of buying a 2009 ELANTRA L 5 Speed Manual. Continental Silver for the outside colour and Black Cloth for the interior. The only extra I want is the block heater. I've gone onto hyundaicanada.com and gone through the "build it price it" menu. It ends up looking like this:

Vehicle Price: 15,845.00
Cash Price Adjustment: 0.00
Other Cash Adjustment: 3850.00
Selected Accessories: 154.95
Delivery and Destination: 1495.00
Other Taxes and Levies: 20.00
GST: 683.25

Clean Air Returned Vehicle:

I assume that if I were to trade in my old Civic that is still registered and insured that it would drop the total vehicle price down $800 for a new total vehicle price of $13,548.20

Is this correct? What is the actual price that I will be asked to pay? I met a salesman last month who told me that they add on fees of about $500. Is this just a scam? Could you give me an actual price that I'd be asked to pay? Also, when do the 2010 Elantras come onto the lot? Would it be worth my while to wait until they do in order to get a better price on a 2009 model? Thanks.

Most dealerships will charge you a DOC fee which range $400+. This fee doesn't appear when you build the car. Yes it can be waived. It's all in the negotiations.

If you are that serious, just walk into a Hyundai dealer early in the week (Mon-Weds) an hour before closing.

So can I expect to pay just $13,548.20? Can I get them to throw anything else into the deal or should I just count myself lucky to get it for the website price?

Depends on stock. Do a quick scope on Sunday to see how many of those exact model you want on their lot. If they have a few and it's close to month end, I'm sure they can be reason with.

But $14K for a Elantra isn't that bad. I doubt you can find that much car for that price.

What is a DOC fee? Documents? Is this just something extra they put on to get more money out of me?

Doc fee is basically the fee required to facilitate the paperwork. I'm assuming they will also arrange the plates and registration so that should cover the registration fees as well.

Basically the dealership is charging you $400+ to type up the bill of sale.

Or fill out credit apps, submit applications, fight for approvals (if so required), go through the finance contracts or lease agreements, process the deal, collects monies and basically be on call for the customer if they're ever having problems or questions in the future. Time costs money especially if theyre getting a subvented rate that pays the dealership nothing.

I would suggest staying very far away from Precision Hyundai. I've bought two cars there and I wouldn't ever again. Their service department also is very crooked.

I personally only find the cost legit if you are financing the vehicle. I have never paid it on any vehicle before.

Hardest time though I had getting out of it though was for the RV I bought over the winter. They really insisted on it even though I was paying cash. I still didn't pay in the end. If there wasn't enough profit in the price of the item that is not my problem.

Nothing wrong with having it "waived" the fee gets charged towards each deal regardles of the outcome it just depends on who actually pays for it the customer or the dealer.
