How do you get cheap flights to Vegas?

I've heard of people talking about $99 return flights to Vegas and everyone says it's so cheap to go there but when I look online it's over $200 each way pretax. The return trip with taxes is no cheaper than $570 anywhere I've looked, I tried Hotwire, Expedia, Flight Centre, Air Canada and West Jet. My friend is having her birthday weekend there and she's flying out on a Thursday, then back on a Sunday. I can only go with her if it's about $300 return so I'm trying all options here. Is there some holy grail of looking for tickets I don't know about?

it is usualy weekdays where it is cheaper, and your usually SOL if you need a specific date...but keep checking, seat sales can happen at anytime

www.kayak.com is what I've used. Works well. You can setup price drop notifications at www.farecompare.com as well.

Kayak is great. I think the guys who say that they got $99 flights to vegas forget to mention that they also paid $200 in taxes.

Westjet always has cheap Vegas flights but taxes brings the price up so much.

Tax is $205? or $209 to vegas so you will never find a price cheaper then that..

Most people are probl talking about prices like $49+taxes

Thursday to sunday are the busiest flights out of Cclgary to Vegas. Finding deals on those days is not very likely. Besides that, Vegas is getting more and more booked up now, and rates are climbing.

I've heard you can get some serious discounts if you drive down to Great Falls, and fly out of there. Parking for a week at the airport is dirt cheap too. I'm sure round trip would be well under $300.

+1 if you really want to be cheap, I was quoted at $378 USD for 2 person round trip

i just got back from vegas, in august, manage to get tickets for $419 CDN after tax, for 4 nights at the excalibur and return flights. super sick deal, tons of people i know went, we all bought from www.westjetvacations.com

Flightcentre has westjet direct flights leaving jan 1-back jan 5 for $338 (after taxes $450 CAD/roundtrip).

Or westjet vacations site has packages (trip + hotel) for those dates for about ~$650CAD all in as well - that's probably the better option. That's for 3-4 stars on the strip (hotels). Saw MGM grand for example for $650 all in (flights, hotel, taxes.)

Sometimes it varies day to day... expedia or itravel2000 are the companies I've always gone through. Sometimes the same trip rate will be cut in half the next day, a bit of luck involved and also patience while booking.

Agreed.

The only crappy thing is that the drive is about 5-6 hours each way. When I was living in Winnipeg it was common to drive to Grand Forks (2 hour drive) and fly from there.

I know people that do this even now and are paying $350 USD (taxes in) per person for their flights and 4 nights at the MGM Grand.

Try BookIt.com I think they even have a promotion to win a free Blackberry or Iphone or something when you book your trip. The last time I went we booked our flight last minute ..it was a package deal. It worked out really well. I recommend booking the time off and then the week or two before try to book something, often you can get some really good deals.
