Default Vote for Mayor: Elect Ric McIver

Since Calgary Mayor Dave Bronconnier has begun his re-election bid today, those of us opposed to him should start to mobilize.

If you have tuned in to the news and have read recent posts on this (and other car forums) you will know that Mayor Dave Bronconnier is fiercely opposed the our Race City Speedway, a safe and supportive facility where local car enthusiasts who meet safety requirements can participate in auto racing off city streets. Recently, City Hall has also prevented local Calgary Police Service members from participating in an event that would see local officers and other police members from across Alberta participate in a fun and safe race at Race City Speedway in a show of support for the facility and the programs Race City hosts.

This Mayor is incredibly out of touch with what Calgarians want and need in a leader, and it is time for change.

I urge you to elect Ric McIver, a person who not only supports the local automotive community, but is experienced, intelligent, and knows what is best for the great city of Calgary and its citizens.

Although this vote still awhile away, please tell everyone you know who is a car guy/girl to vote for Ric.

    CHEERS!

The only thing McIver knows how to do is generate cheap sound bytes to get his mug on the news. Blinks will run this city into the ground or bore us all to death. Take your pick.

If McIver runs, he has my support 100% and I would even help campaign for him in my free time.

I actually like Ric, and as a bonus for voting for him, I can toss the fucking tard we have in there now to the curb. Good riddance to bad rubbish!

I've been out of town for the last while, so I might have missed this, but has McIver actually confirmed yet that he will run in the upcoming election?

I have no idea, but i sent off an email to his office that if he does run, my wife and I will work for him on his campaign.

I sent that off a couple hours ago, and don't expect a responce until next week being the weekend and all....

Coming up with an alternative plan to using Race City as a dump wouldn't hurt either.

Does McIver actually have a platform beyond Race City? I've looked but don't see much. I fear at best we'd have another Al Duerr, at worst we'd have a reactionary populist (not reactionary in the radical sense, reactionary in that he wont be proactive because that would involve making necessary but unpopular decisions).

This flaming bullshit about a bridge would hopefully be halted and told to fuck off forever, and that stupid twat-hole who's shutting memorial down so that gunt-women can walk their children on a busy street would hopefully also get quashed.

I do not give a flying piss about a fucking bridge. I don't care about an overdone contempo look to our downtown. Expand it and build new buildings, sure. But if that fucking bridge isn't moving cars across it, suck the shit out of my plugged toilet.

We need action that moves the city forward. Not wasting money on unnecessary bullshit like a flaming pride bridge that serves a disgustingly small amount of people.

I was away for much of the summer, but the impression I get is that Memorial closure talk will be quashed from now on. The idea was tried and it was a bust, the city can move on.

So for Race City, against the bridge: for a city of a million people these seem like pretty small issues. What I want to know is how he plans to keep the city moving forward without raising property taxes (or "whining" to the province, because it seems people hate it when our mayor does that).

The bridges aren't what will cause property tax increases. You could scrap them sure, but its a drop in the bucket, but unless there are dozens of such projects I don't think you can make all the necessary upgrades this city needs. He seems to be for the improvement of parks, I imagine he's for the road improvements. What are his plans for the SW ring road? Urban Sprawl? Public transport etc. I'm more than willing to change my vote should somebody deserve it, but 2 issues (one of which I actually support) aren't enough to do so

I will NEVER vote for McIver.

All he knows how to do is freeze taxes by halting needed infrastructure development.

Voting for him solely on the Race City issue is pretty stupid.

Mciver is way too right wing for me -- associated with Craig Chandler and the PGIB

Right wing religious based fascism at its finest.

    http://www.pgib.ca/lobbying/index.shtml

    Political policies like this:

EQUALITY PGIB believes that Canadians should be treated equally regardless of race, language and culture, and not receive special treatment because of these characteristics. We believe in promoting Canadians, not hyphenated Canadians. Multiculturalism and Employment Equity programs have divided this country and promoted racism. Therefore, PGIB promotes the elimination of the following: * Government funded multiculturalism * Grants or funding of special interest groups * Human Rights Commissions and Tribunals * Forced bilingualism * Employment Equity laws and programs
He even has a right wing radio talk show on Jebus radio - Shine 88.9 FM

    http://www.craigchandler.ca/

and Chnadler was the leader of the CCC -- Concerned Christians Coalition -- a religious ultra right organization with a religious based and seemingly bigotted stand against homosexual rights

    http://www.cbc.ca/canada/calgary/sto...in-ruling.html

Mciver's association in this religious ultra right wing circle certainly makes him a questionable mayoral candidate to me.

Is that you ZenOps? Bronco is fart too left wing for me, a libertarian homsexual who supports abortion as a method of birth control and an active proponent of affirmative action perhaps.

Are that many people on this forum too young to remember the Al Duerr years?

You know why Bronco had to raise taxes? Because he had to catch up on 10 years of infrastructure neglect from the Duerr years. And now people want to vote another Al Duerr type tightwad into office because of a bridge and race city.

The city has seen unprecedented growth and the money to build infrastructure to keep up with demand has to come from somewhere. I think Bronco has actually done a decent job of getting a lot of things done while keeping our taxes around the national average.

But hey, if brutally long stressful commutes, crumbling infrastructure and being left in the dust by the rest of the country is worth saving $15/month on property taxes, then vote Ric McIver.

So a Randian, populist, neo-conservative zealot vs. a socialist libertarian, salad-tossing reprobate in a clash of veiled-racist and religious sponsored inaction and fabulous tax and spend policies.

Should be the most exciting mayoral race since the alcoholic brought us the Olympics.
