Just got the Bestbuy flyer and the new Pace receiver is in it for $299. You just add an external hdd to make it into a pvr, anyone know how big of a hdd you can use?

anyone have an idea if its any easier to get the recordings off the pvr onto a computer?
What makes you think it will work with just a standard external hdd. Says it needs a Shaw PVR Expander....which is $200 bucks for a 1TB version on bestbuy....
Well hopefully it does otherwise it's a waste of money. Doesn't Bell have one that works with any external? Maybe they are trying the same thing.
every review i have heard from people that have this on other carriers say any e-sata external hard drive will work.

I have looked at some pvr stuff before and know that bell allows any hd for storage but people were compalining that shaw couldn't...so no idea. If any e-sata works then this would be a good way to get all setup for a bit more...though having an extra unit sitting on the side sucksOriginally posted by beecue

Those Shaw fuckers. I bought a Motorola PVR last month because they said that you can only get the Pace through them and only to rent it at around $20 a month with no purchase option.
edit...

according to this the 'PVR Extender' will work with a Motorola 6416 as well. Does that mean that they have quietly enabled the eSATA port on the back?

looks liek ATm onlyt he shaw branded extenders will work (on both the motorola 3416 6416 and pace boxes)
but you have to phone shaw to activate it, and there is no support for 3rd party drives at this time.

It's more the revision of the drive specifically plays nice with the Motorola hardware. You can use an unbranded drive but it might just cause your dct to reboot randomly. You can however buy the unbranded drives with the same model on the web(AKA unbranded exactly the same thing)...Originally posted by Thaco

negative... int he link i posted some people have said they called to have the port activated and the CSR could physically not activate the port in the system without the serial from a shaw branded expander.Originally posted by mazdavirgin

$500 for a PVR with 1TB of space is pretty good for Shaw. I am going to pick one up to replace my old one.

Actually the eSATA ports for any of shaw's motorola boxes should be working after Oct 31
and I checked, you can use any eSATA external hard drives most likely after Oct 31
The Shaw expanders are going to be Western Digital and Seagates.
they are gonna try to sell you with their versions because they offer 3 yrs on all their terminals and equipment.
Is this one any better in terms of speed vs the Motorola one?
Looking at picking up a HD box.
thanks

I really wish they would improve the GUI for their boxes. Coming from a Vista Media Center PC ( dropped it because it was getting too flakey and I was spending as much time getting it stable as I was watching TV, plus wanted HD ) to Shaw is a massive step backwards in terms of presentation and usefulness.
I really wish there was someway to filter out the channels that you don't get on the guide. I don't need to scroll through 100+ channels that I have no interest in. Also it messes up the PVR side. My wife wanted to record the season premier of Lie To Me this year so she searched it, then setup the recording. Only thing is that the search brought up the Global Sask feed as it was on the earliest, which we don't get and it happily accepted the request to record. Stupid.
