Default Low light photography on the go

I need to step up my skills and equipment for low light photos, mostly in situations where there is no time to set up a tripod or some extravagant light set up.

Some situations I have run into where my 50mm f1.8 and onboard flash just isn't cutting it. Wedding reception in almost complete dark, family events in poorly lit house, parties at night, portraiture etc.

Now I was thinking perhaps go with a speedlite and diffuser? I dont want to spend a whole lot of money and I would like to keep the equipment versatile. Any suggestions?

strobe, monopod, or If you're either Canon/Nikon user, definitely IS/VR lenses will help to reduce blurry pictures. IMO, strobe would be the best bet for your needs.

Strobe = Canon 430EX Canon 580EX speedlites. It is the flash that attaches to the top of the camera.

Based on the kind of pictures you like to take, I would highly recommend this as well: http://www.dembflashproducts.com/flipit/

I am continually impressed by that little device.

thanks for suggestions, is there any major difference between 430ex and 580ex? How do you guys mount your off camera flash? And I am still trying to figure out how this whole remote trigger thing works. thanks

check strobist.com for info on off camera flash. It's the bible

Off camera flash can be triggered either by wire, or via wireless infrared or radio.

580EX Speedlight and a Gary Fong Lightsphere

I use this all of the time in VERY low light settings at family gatherings with questionable light and the results are VERY good for the cost and weight.

There are so many little differences between two units. I think the biggest differences are basically GN# and whether it can be used as master unit(430(x),580(o)).

I can only hope you come and wear it at the next photog meet. Way better than a nametag imo.

I think it's a bit expensive for a used ST.
I have been using a Sigma 500 DG Super for a while and quite like it.
