Going to be a NASCAR-style afternoon race - starting in sunlight and finishing under the lights. They're going to have trouble setting up the cars and selecting tires, I think!

    Great architecture, boring track.

    Whatever happened to elevation changes?

It's boring because the elevation doesn't change? Not every track on the calender can be like Spa, especially a Marina based track. If anything, it's these new street circuits (Valenica & Singapore) that are boring.

David Coulthard says there are few overtaking opportunities and it's dusty offline. Not that there's much passing in F1 anyway.

Coulthard and Brundle test-drive Yas Marina Circuit

They built a 1.2 km straight because they want to see them go fast! The runoff areas are paved, but smaller than at some other tracks, so drivers won't be able to get as crazy as they do some places (which do end up looking like the parking lot at Deerfoot Mall).

Further to track design and passing, McLaren's engineering director, Paddy Lowe, was just asked about how ineffective this year's car design rule changes have been and whether further rule changes might help:

I personally think that the benefits will come by looking at circuits. We were talking about this only the other day with (McLaren team principal) Martin Whitmarsh, and he made quite an obvious statement that is also quite meaningful. If you go to a circuit and you ask a driver where he can overtake he will say, ‘there’s only one place where I might be able to do it and it is here.’ All the drivers will agree on that same corner. So if you follow the logic of that, we should be asking why all corners can’t have the features that drivers can so easily pinpoint to improve opportunities.

    Paddy Lowe interview on Formula1.com

DC's interview after his test-drive didn't indicate this track had those precious passing corners.
