Default Catholic School rant: Halloween/"black and orange spirit day"

such BS... Halloween is supposed to be for the kids, gives them a chance to dress up, pretend to be something they aren't, superheroes, ghosts, vampires, sports players, whatever... but the catholic school system has decided to take that away from the kids... (i don't know how long this has been in place as this is my son's first year at a catholic school)

Newsletter says that kids may wear Black or orange coloured clothing for "spirit day" no costumes... IMO, that's just pathetic, they know the kids are going to be in costumes later that night, they love showing the costumes off to thier friends at school, who they likely wont see that night...

Yeah it's been like that for 2-3 years in Toronto, but not just Catholic schools. Huge discussion on that last year on this forum.

I think its bullshit too. Like you said, kids love showing each other their costumes and with Calgary weather usually being shit, it gives them a chance to wear the costumes minus the giant winter jackets.

We had costume contests and treated that day like a holiday! It was fun!

    Sounds lame now.

If I was a parent, I'd dress them up anyways and send them to school; if they get sent home, I'd reward them with ice cream.

It's because the fact that one loud person is offended, while 1000 others don't give a fuck or are perfectly happy the way things are. Evidently, the most loud, obnoxious person is correct

That pisses me off. Let kids be kids. They have the rest of their lives to be politically correct (if they chose to be).

    Nice ad ....>

    not.

    sigh

    anyways ...

I was raised catholic but grew up into an athiest I still pay catholic school taxes, my wife pays public so we can send our kid to either (to avoid teachers strikes etc) but this shit is just stupid.

We have our son in the public system, thank god ( pun )

If he did go to a catholic shool and I did get a letter like this I think I would keep him home and write the teacher that he is coming to school that day dressed as a ghost and let them figure it out.

Agreed with the above posts, this is retarded.

On that note, the hell with happy holidays. Everyone I run into this holiday season is getting a merry christmas.

this and the teachers even dressed up for it, gave out candy during class etc.

it's totally fked now, i mean isnt there that thing where some schools dont even sing the national anthem anymore? i had to do it in french too you come to this country you dont have to follow its customs/traditions but you should at least be tolerant of them. on the other hand those who have been born and raised here bitching about it, things like these have been in place here long before your parents and they never said shit so stfu or gtfo.

it's all for the kids gdamnit not for you to gripe over because you had a shitty childhood..

my kids have been in the public system for many of those years it's been orange and black day.

they didn't want the offensive bleeding masks and gore, they sad it made the little kids scared and they didn't want to offend people new to Canada with strange traditions.

I find it more frightening how many teachers can't keep their hands to themselves and off our children.

It is what it is, let the kids have fun and be excited for the day.

My mom teaches kindergarten in a catholic school and they are allowed to dress up... Hell my mom is dressing up for the day. The only thing is they are not allowed to distribute candy due to the whole push for healthy eating/whatnot.

I posted about this last year too. I found out that in the public system it's upto the school whether to allow dressing up or not.

I'm not sure how it is in the catholic system now, but because of this 'pussification' in the public system i have doubts whether my son will go to a public school or not.

That's the Catholic system for ya... what else do you expect?

If you don't like it, put your kid back in the inferior public system.

    I agree it's lame though.

hrm, you are raising your kid as a catholic and you're complaining about wearing a costume for halloween??? i think there are far more important issues with Christianity and Catholicism that you should be concerned with
