"Last year Apple offered ... $51 and $101 off the aluminum iMacs"

You'd save more by getting someone you know to get you the education discount. Or get a refurb:

I know I am a heathen for posting in this thread, but I have one question and one statement.

The question is: What is it about Macs that make them so popular? I've never figured it out o_O

The statement: After using my current screen, I would think 27 inches as being too small. I have a Dell 3007WFP-HC, a nice big, bright, high color (hence the HC) monitor that takes up a lot of real estate on my desk. The idea, however, of having a full computer, and a decently powerful little beasty at that, for less than I paid for this monitor ALONE, sounds like a deal to me. But, then again, the last Mac I had deep experience with was a IIe

Awesome for internet, music, videos, photos and multimedia creation companies swear by Final Cut Pro, Aperture, Photoshop CSx, etc. Nice OS UI elements like Expose and Spaces allow you to separate and grab what you only need. Although Windows 7 has really stepped up its game with the new taskbar and Aero that pretty much does the same thing.

I love my MacBook Pro & iMac, but when it comes to productivity and getting my work done, I refuse to use anything else except MS Office on a Windows box. MS Office on Mac is like trying to have sex with a girl who doesn't naturally lubricate. You can get it to work, but you'll kill yourself trying.

@ the MS office comment, I 1000% agree. I used mac all summer at my wedding company job and I LOVED Final Cut Pro. Seriously made me consider getting the 27" but than one of my group members made me use MS office on his MBP at one of our group meeting and I nearly fucking killed myself by how bad it was. It was fucking TERRIBLE. Took me like 20 min to properly type up and format 2 paragraphs. Never again.

The reason that I'm switching over is that I'm tired/don't have the time anymore to be constantly dicking around with a PC anymore. Don't get me wrong, I'm very experienced PC user that has built MANY machines in the past, I know how to code in Visual Basic, C++ and so on, however I am constantly trying to find a program or updating something or reformatting everything because my PC isn't working properly or slow or whatever.

With the Mac, the software was built and designed to work specifically with the hardware. I'm not gaming on it anymore (used to a ton, but I have an Xbox and PS3 now instead for the same reason, every time a new, hot game came out I had to upgrade something on my rig), 90% of what I do now is photo work, internet/social media and downloading/streaming movies and music. As for MS Office, I have a work PC laptop for that and I'll purchase iWorks as I believe short of MS Access it does everything as well if not better than Office does.

These are all things the iMacs excel at... Oh and the Wife really likes the Mac TV spots.

For the sake of discussion, was it not mentioned in the previous two pages that Macs get upgraded every 6 months or so anyways?

So, so far I have seen: ease of use, media creation, and simplified interface. I guess my ingrained dislike mostly comes from the fact that I am still a gamer, but I've been noticing a lot more Mac's around and, as I am going to be a computer technician, I really want to know the demographic so I know what kind of stuff Mac's are used for.

Also, regarding MS Office... since the OS is Linux based, wouldn't OpenOffice work? o_O

I have office 08 for mac. I think it's great, only issue is that my Office 2003 (PC) work contact list and emails can't be synced with Entourage. it's the ONLY drawback.

I tried to find a 27" today - no luck in Calgary. Sold out everywhere.

I grabbed a 21.5 --- but if a 27" is available before my 14 return period elapses, I'll jump on it.

I do all my gaming on a Mac ATM. It's not bad. For example I just finished Dragon Age on my uMBP (9600m GT).

I am very tempted to get a gaming PC --- maybe even sell my uMBP and get another gaming laptop. I've been through this cycle a few times:

get a gaming rig, miss OS X
get a Mac, miss high settings gaming

I have tried hackintoshes, but there always seems to be something that pops up and ruins the experience. What I need is for Apple to release a MBP with Core i7 and a 4830 (like the HP Envy 15 done right).

Wow....you should wait to get the quad core 27" if you can afford it...the 21.5 is nice but small, IMO....if it works for you though, great!

Just got an e-mail from Apple...

This Friday is "TGIF Sale", as per Apple their "biggest sale of the season".

Just a heads up confirmation for those thinking about buying soon. No words on deals, however a leak for the US site (from BGR) showed most things like Macs, MBP, etc. are at/around normal education pricing on new products.

Also for those who are planning to buy a mac product you should always check which cycle it's in.

    http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/

The best and worst thing about buying a mac is knowing that it will be outdated in less then 6 months. Just be happy that you can watch porn and not fear viral infections.

So, I checked the Apple.ca site today and they are offering the same offer as last year, $101 off the iMac...

I'm kind of disappointed, but I guess $101 is better than nothing.

True. Better than nothing, but not gonna persuade the guy buying the 3-5k MBP or iMac to go buy NOW.
