Default Anyone into astronomy or astrophotography here?

    Hi guy's

Picking up a telescope to do some sky watching and astrophotography. I was into this this stuff about 20 years ago and would love to get back into it.

This is the telescope i am picking up next week. It is from Celestron. I wan't to take some pictures of deep sky objects. Is there anyone here into this stuff that can give me some tips?

    Cheers,

My favorite place is along spray lakes road in Canmore/K-country.

Best places seem to be the Goat Creek parking lot and Shark Mountain heli-pad.

At goat creek you can have shooting star competitions. Go with a girl and see who counts the most!

Id love to get further into it but i can not remember stellar stuff for my life. Basically i can point out the big dipper... or is it the little one... see what i mean?
^^^^ Thanks for the tip. The shooting star competitions sounds fun. I can't go with a girl though, my wife wouldn't like that unless it was my daughters coming with me

    cheers,

If there's anyone who can tell you about this, it's D'z Nutz. I'm sure he'll chime in soon. He helped me pick out my first setup.

    Nice! Is that a C8 or C9.25?

I've got a C8 myself. These scopes would be more suited for things like planets. If you want deep sky objects, you probably want something with a wider field like a short refractor.

I'm hoping to do some viewing this winter, something I haven't done very much of in the past few years.

    Hey D'z

It is the Celestron CGEM 800. I don't know if it is worth going to 9.25? I like to do deep space photography but more interested in planets than anything else.

Do you think i should move up to a 9.25? The price jumps quite a bit, but if it is going to make a big difference than i wouldn't mind spending little more and getting the bigger aperture.

This is the one i am getting:

Tough call. The 9.25" will be able to resolve planets much better than the 8", but like you said the cost goes up quite a bit, as does the weight. You may also need a sturdier mount, especially if you plan on doing any imaging). Not only that, but there would be longer cooling times for the tube for optimal viewing/imaging. So it's not just about getting the bigger telescope, but there's extra things to deal with. For planets, it's tough to beat an 8" in terms of bang for the buck.

I've been itching to get a binoviewer for my C8 for a while, but I keep cheaping out! haha
