Question Purcheasing cars out of province???

I couldnt find anything on the search.. if you were to purchease a car in ontario, are you exempt from the PST if you are registering the vehicle in alberta? or do you have to pay the PST and get reimbursed? or does it not matter where youre registering the vehicle and have to pay the GST+PST??? Thanks

If you pay for the car from Alberta (read: you are not physically in Ontario when paying), and the car is leaving Ontario, then you don't pay PST.

If you physically buy the car in Ontario, then you pay sales tax.

GST you must always pay, anywhere in Canada.

Ontario cars are always $2,000 to $ 5,000 less .. or 10%-20% less... depends what kind of used car..

However .. you get what you pay ! the condition are "usually" worse then calgary cars, and they rust badly.

Again, buying an used car is more or less depends on luck too. If you buy a car, and just want to drive it for a yr or 2, then sell it, it is not a bad idea to buy from Ont, however, if you wanna to buy a car to keep for long.. then stay with local cars.

For some 1 or 2 yr old used cars, the price from Ontario is not much lowever, plus you need to ship the car ($800-900) and out of province inspection ($100-$200)

Anyway, if you found a nice car, and in good price, (ie: car from your auntie in Toronto) then it will save you some money.

lol, good one. Calgary cars are in much worse shape than Ontario cars. In fact, Calgary cars, in a mechanical sense, are the worst cars in the country. I've bought 2 that required engine rebuilds at fairly low mileage. When shopping for my 3rd car, I had to say no to about 4 or 5 cars that I was planning on purchasing, because none of them passed a compression and leakdown test.

A LOT of people in Calgary neglect their vehicles. I'd rather buy from BC or Ontario any day

Rust wise is a different story btw.

LOL, holy anecdotal evidence! Here's a way you can prove your study: take a random sample of 1000 people in calgary, vancouver and toronto. If you can find a significant difference in the quality of car maintenance (say based on frequency of oil changes) between these 3 populations, I'll give you a cookie

As for the PST thing... not sure if its true that you pay it if you purchase it in the province. I should think that you could at least get a refund Anyone else know about this?

My next car will probably be an ontario car because going price on 25-35K cars here I'm looking at in BC/AB can be 10-15K cheaper in ontario

I think, on a new car, you pay the PST at the time of registration.

All I'm saying, mechanical wise, I've had better luck in other parts of the country, same stands true for my friends. And actually, if my experience counts for nothing, then neither does anyone else's, because there's no way to prove that cars are in better shape here then, so it works both ways.

PST is paid at the time of purchase, because in order to transfer the registration from the previous owner to the new owner, you have to prove that you've paid the taxes (in this case, GST + PST).

No you do not have to pay PST up front, or at least I didn't have to on my 323 and S2K. I tried to say the same thing when I went shopping but didn't work.

well if you buy from bc then you pay the pst when you take it to get registered. so you won't have to pay the pst since you will reg. in alberta.

I read thru all your accounts .... still not conclusive.

I live in BC and I'm getting on a trip to Ontario and Montreal.
One of the task is to buy a car and drive it back to BC.
This paticular car I'm looking for is a 97' VW Diesel Cargo Van, called
"Transporter". There're many of them available in Quebec and
$8,000 cheaper. Ya, ya, I know about the snow/salt difference
between BC and QC... but $10K is very different from & $18k too.

How do I do it?? I guess I can find the car in Montreal and
call the seller from Ottawa?? so I am "personally" out of
province? Then?? Do I drive the car to BC without
    registration or ??

Of course, I'll call around... but ICBC or whoever in QC ...
they don't care if I pay the PST twice. Please, someone tells me.
    Thanks

    Tom
