Even Vista can pick up non-broadcasted SSIDs. It is pointless to disable your broadcast. Just have a good WPA2 key and mac filtering. Reduce the number of IP your router will hand out via DHCP as well.

Ours at home is NYPD (802.11n) and LAPD (802.11b/g). NYPD is WPA2 with MAC filtering, LAPD is open wide but throttled.

I could care less about someone else using my internet. About the kiddie porn, they can trace it back to your IP but can they not trace it back to the originating MAC address as well? Therefore you can't be held liable if the MAC address does not reside in your residence? Seems kinda iffy that one.

Mine is 1234; not broadcast, WPA2 filtering, and only 3 mac addresses that can connect to it.

The other network, "Hack_Me" - is a standalone 386sx16 in the basement running linux; WEP - pretends its the interwebz - feeds those who connect a nasty message; usually parses out about 15-20 email addresses a month; who get a form letter about 'unauthorizingly'd use of my interwebz' and recently was changed to end in 'govern yourself accordingly'

mines encrypted to WPA2 but I was wondering can i take off the encryption and put mac address filtering... i hear encryption slows down your internet not much but still does?

and do i need to mac address filter wired devices or only wireless? I assume only wireless?

You will get charged with distribution of child pornagraphy.

It doesnt matter who what where when or why.. if it goes through your connection and they bust your ass, you are fucked.

Also, the way the packets get routed, unless your wireless router tracks mac / ip addresses in its own log, the mac address of the packet changes as it flows through routers to get to the internet.

Check out http://www.cromwell-intl.com/tcpip/routing.html in the putting it all together end to end, is a nice diagram showing you that the mac changes as the packet flows across the internet.

Everyone, do not turn off your wep/wpa and enable mac filtering. Its a joke, and annoying to manage. Just set your password to all 0's or 1's or whatever if you want an easy password.

And no point in linking articles about WEP / WPA cracking becuase if someone goes that far, they really want in.

Mine's boring but the one for my sister's is amusing because she lives in a big appt. building. Started as GIGANERD, which she then changed to RAMLOVER.

    Mine is 1337 W1R3L355,

I also have all my neighbors routers DMZ'd to my mac address, sometimes when I need all the network speed, I like to mac filter their routers.
At one point I considered changing their router login passwords, but felt that locking them out of their own internets was bad enough

    HighRollers
WPA2 authentication, using a 26 character hexadecimal passphrase.

Annoying as fuck to enter on mobile devices (I use a USB stick to enter it on PCs), but it isn't an easy one to crack open.

My firewall supports WPA2 Enterprise, so I've been toying with the idea of running an internal RADIUS server for authentication.

So many people around me are still using WEP. It's so tempting to start screwing with their wireless. But I like to many of my neighbors to do this, for now.
