Ya I was just going to say that. Walk into walmart and ask for the black friday specials and watch the lady stand there like a deer in head lights.

It seems like some stores started running with it last year, and now everyone in Canada is doing it

    It is an American thing.

In Canada they are just having "2-day sales" to prevent people from going to the US to buy crap.

Canadian retailers are still hurting from the recession and this is just a ploy to get a few more sales north of the border.

yea, cause the whole point of 'black friday' is that it's the day after thanksgiving, which a lot of people have off so the stores started marketing the hell out of it as the 'official' start to the christmas holiday season SO PEOPLE CAN BUY MOAR AND MOAR AND MOAR.

The black firday deals at soundsaround suck (surprise!) on the items I recognize. They are hundreds of $ more expensive for the same items that were on sale at the in-store "big 4" sale.

What's wrong with having more sales? I don't know about you but buying things at significant discount sounds pretty damn good to me. It's just a sale. If you don't want to go, then stay home. Simple. I say bring on the Black Friday sale to Canada!
You have a couple of photos that are great... you must be very good at photoshop!

    well ...

More sales means demand for products, as stock needs to be replenished.
Most products imported from china taiwan india ... S SE Asia
When purchasing higher quantities, companies get bigger discounts.
Local North American manufacturers, the few that are left, cannot match above said "value".
Short term, value for the people. Long term, manufacturing jobs are lacking.
There are a few steps further, but the idea is dependability on one market while low/few local manufacturers disappearing are not good outcomes.

It's the only day of the year Apple stores have a sale.

That is also because cost on apple products is actually quite high. In most cases a sale means they are losing money on the product itself. It's not so much the iPods and Macs that make them money, but the ridiculous amount of highly priced accessories.

At Futureshop for every iPhone we sell, we lose $7. Every Nano we sell, we lose $2. Touches are the only thing with profit, and its only a couple of dollars.

^What online US stores ship to Canada? For examples store like Best Buy that actually have a decent sale going on in America would most likely not ship here.

DING! No successful business model (I would think) would EVER sell anything at a loss. It just doesn't make any sense whatsoever. You might as well not be in business then, even if you are making enough money to turn a profit on the "accessories".
