Default Looking for: adopt a family for the holidays????

Hey guys. I have a real soft spot for kids, (as i have 2 of my own that are spoiled rotten) Iam looking to help out a family in need for christmas (more of buying the kids some presents) Iam having a hard time of finding somewhere that does that. I have seen a few where you make up a basket and drop it off. Iam looking to perhaps talk to the parent find out what their kids would like and go get it for them.

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks again

I believe that CUPS downtown does this. I'm not too sure if they let you talk to the family directly but they will give you a list of thing that could help the family out, not just toys but basic life necessities as well.

Yeah id like to know the family iam helping and ask them what they need. not just give a donantion, though i know that helps and i may have to do that.

There was the operation shoe box but they we got turned away because like you, there was tons of support that they could only cater to a certain amount of people willing to volunteer/donate.

try emailing a local school or church (if you're religious) and see if they can suggest anyone.

I know it lacks the personal touch, but every year we go to WalMart and they have wish cards that little kids write. These little kids are in families can cannot afford presents, so they write a card to "santa" and put it on a tree in Walmart. We take our daughter and pick a card and go shopping for that little girl and spoil her rotten. Feels great and teaches our daughter about spreading good cheer and sharing with those less fortunate.

The Calgary Sun has a program that I am participating in whereby we have adopted a family. It might be a little late to find a family, but it's worth a shot.

Good on you, and good luck.

I did the adopt a family through the Salvation Army. I got a little information about the family as well as a list of the items they needed and a small Christmas wish list.

While it is nice to know who you are giving to, it almost doesn't matter. Regardless, you're helping a family out in need. Originally, I wanted to know the family I was donating to beforehand. Most of these people have fallen on hard times and are doing what they can to survive. I figured for their pride and dignity, its probably anonymous for a reason

Regardless, its a nice gesture Jordan

Our company does this every year. We all pitch in and donate a fairly good chunk of money to an adopted family.

Usually the family makes out a list of things they need and suggested toys for the kids.

Every year we would see things like gift cards to safeway (food), bed sheets, cleaning supplies, socks, underwear, winter boots, shoes and odd toys that are resonably priced.

Within our company we usualy raise about $2500 to help a family. This year the list had things like specific brand name shoes (@$90/pr), a digital camera, laptops, and a ps3.

    I didnt donate this year....

I gave $100 to the local shelter instead. It really pissed me off that a family would stick there hand out and expect a fucking PS3. They obviously cant be going through that hard of times if their main concern is a laptop to surf porn on.

PS the kids are 4 and 6 so it wasnt for school.

^I quit donating to those when a family requested Aritzia gift certificates a few years ago. What an F.U. to the people who actually cared to put their time into organizing these things.

    WTF... That's so brutal.

to the OP. Be sure it's going to a deserving family that's truly down on their luck.

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but you see "families" consisting of a single mother, who has 5-6 kids with 3 or more different men. Yes, they're down on their luck, but I would rather donate to the family who has been trying to make things work, but got laid off, etc...(truly bad luck), than someone who couldn't keep her legs closed.

    Flame on...

I would contact the Childrens Village School, as I know they took donations last year and were very appreciative.

I would support Beyond adopting a family. Someone could agree to be the drop off for the stuff we could pick a family grab the list fill it up and then that drop off person could deliver it to the sun or whoever. I would offer to be the drop off but i leave next wednesday.

    Me too.
I'm amused by the simplicity of this game. Bring me your finest meats and cheeses.
