    Default King's Quest

did any of you old guys play this series as kids? I remember going over to my grandpa's house, and playing KQ1 off a copied floppy disk on his Sperry 80286. he even had the whole manual photocopied from this friend

when I was like 5 or 6, he used to have to boot it for me cause I didn't know dos. but then when i was about 7, I was staying there for a week one summer and snuck down to his office to play it. i don't know how this happened, but somehow I taught myself enough dos to boot the game (he may have had it written on the sleeve) and the rest, they say, is history.

i ended up buying and finishing the whole series, and I honestly think it's my favorite game series ever. (although ocarina of time is a far superior game in that genre).

there is a fan-made sequel to the last game called The Silver Lining (http://www.tsl-game.com/home.php). It's been in development for like 10 years, and they keep saying it will be out in just a few months, but then keep pushing back the release date. that sucks, cause i'm looking forward to it.

Sperry 80286 (gramps had a couple of external HDs - i think the biggest was 20 mb heh):

I've probably played a couple from the series. I think I preferred Quest for Glory.

Many of them can be downloaded from abandonware sites in case anyone is feeling nostalgic.

I played Kings Quest 1 on the IBM PC jr., had joystick control with jump and duck, with keyboard for text commands.

Very fun to 'figure things out' , but in retrospect it could be very frustrating, having to type the commands in.

    "Climb tree"
    "You can't do that here"

When I grabbed the carrot and got the goat walking along with me, I thought I was king, no bad guys would mess with me because I had a goat.

The music that goes with the witch (when she was flying on her broom or in the house) scared the $#it out of me.

When #5 finally came out, it became a little easier with the point and click action icons instead of typing commands in. Click everywhere!

All in all, very good times with these games (only played 1, 4, 5)

Packaging sure made it look bad-ass huh?

I played quest for glory, Police quest II, one of the kings quest(7th and an earlier one i forget which... might have been 6th) and my all time favorite Monkey Island. I actually have Monkey island on my iphone right now

It's the crappy updated version though. I wanted the original, but they don't have that for the iphone.

I tried to find out which kings quest i played and stumbled upon this website.

seems to have a bunch of those games you can download, but I can't figure out how to install them.

I preferred QFG as well. Space Quest 2 and 3 were probably my favourite games of that style back in the day. I didn't understand 90% of the humour but I'd play with my Dad watching and he'd laugh his ass off at some stuff and told me I'd get it when I was older :P

I'm an enormous Sierra fan. All of the original quest games (and similar ones to them like the Kyrandia series as well).

If you're looking for a fun little update to KQ1 though, check out AGD Interactive. They've done an amazing job at giving the game a new look, with the same old feel.

yea, I played both of their remakes, but have to admit that I didn't really like them. i dunno, i guess the graphics, sound, keyboard input, etc. are just too nostalgic for me.

I also had the Leisure Suit Larry collection, that was pretty fun, too. it also came with the original Softporn Adventure, which was the text-based predecessor to LSL 1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Softporn_Adventure).

both the KQ Collection and the LSL Collections were ported (or something) to run on windows 95/98 machines, but even those ports don't run on anything released after that. I guess I should look around for an old windows 95 disc and install it in virtualbox.

P.S. you can download Softporn, and some other Al Lowe games, at http://www.allowe.com/More/download.htm Softporn runs in dos on xp.

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

I played the kings quest series way back than. Really fun games. My favorite was kings quest 4.

My favorite was the original Heroes Quest/Quest for Glory 1. Everything about the game was awesome. Quest for Glory 2 whick took place in a desert setting was really good too!
