Default What do you guys think of an F40 spoiler on a 300zx?

So, the rear spoiler on my Z32 has caught the deterioration bug, as anyone with Z32s probably are aware of. The edges on the sides no longer are quite flush with the body, the black area at the rear is starting to fall apart, and the paint is cracking. It actually looks ok from a distance, but I would rather replace it.

Speedtech has offered me the F40 spoiler for $150. It is a smokin deal, but I'm not sure what to think about it. I've always kinda questioned huge-ass spoilers on cars. At least this thing has the speed to match. But still, it just seems... excessive. On the other hand, the deal is almost too good to pass up.

So please answer my poll so I can get everyone's thoughts to help me in my decision.

What? The car? Or the spoiler?

If you mean the former, I never did.

If you mean the latter, I never did. Wings West calls it their F40 spoiler. Take up your issue with them.

Uh... no thanks. I'm trying to keep costs DOWN with a $150... not to throw $1500 away....

I am surprised how many are suggesting wingless. I kinda like the look of wings on the Z. If I DID choose this:

    a) Is the stock one held on with bolts or adhesive?
    b) Would this be detrimental to high-speed handling, or is the OEM spoiler really just for show?

The spoiler is just for show haha. I would get rid of your spoiler as well. They are attached with bolts. there will be holes. You can take some time to weld the holes shut, grind them/sand them down, and get some matching paint to paint it. Just an idea. I wouldnt think that the f40 spoiler would use your stock bolt holes....im not 100%, but usually aftermarket spoilers dont bolt to stock locations.Hell, the 180sx kouki spoiler doesnt mount to the stock 240sx locations and its the same chassis and its a factory spoiler haha. Either way, looks like you may be in to filling holes.

The wing is too much. IMO, the wing does not help the natural flow of the body. I honestly would be embarassed to have that on. If it is a mod based on how good a deal it is and not what you intended in the first place, then I would say no to the deal. But your choice obviously.

^^ Oh God, that would not even be a consideration.

Ok - I think I will pass on the F40-style wing and just rip the one that is on there right off, if it does nothing for downforce.

I think I do still prefer the look with a subtle spoiler (like the 95+ OEM, as Importz suggested) but I'm not willing to pay the $400 to buy one just for looks...

And Disoblige: I agree with you regarding the flow of the body. It looks ok on the F40, because it has sharp lines. But the 300 does not, and it looks kinda out of place.

Anyone know anybody who would be willing to do a quick weld job on the holes?

Anybody with a mig can do it, the trick is to keep it nice and cool, too much heat will warp panels. I would do it for you, but all of my machines at work are running flux core, and that doesnt like to run cold, well, not 0.45 anyways.

So, I opted to take the advice of the majority, and remove the spoiler altogether. The car was once silver, so there is definitely paint to be done. Luckily though, since the car was a NA at one point, the spoiler was not mounted with bolts. No holes!

Now I have an extra issue though. I didn't really think about it, but I guess I now need the lens from a N/A which goes over the 3rd brake light.

Anyone have a parts car I can steal from?
