    Default My 1989 Nissan Silvia

So since I've finally made enough progress to actually start a build thread, I figured I'd throw up some pics of the progress I have made on my S13.

I got it in the summer of 2008, so I'm coming up to my second year owning it. I ended up trading a 1998 Integra GS + $600 for the car so I figure I got a hell of a deal back in the day. Heres the original FS thread if you are interested in mods and such: http://forums.beyond.ca/showthread.php?threadid=225658

Anyway this is how it looked when I picked it up:

Right away I did a few mods, including a 3" Turbo Outlet, 3" Downpipe and a resonated test pipe all from bings.ca. I also bought an old school HKS SQV bov from JDM source. These are all basic mods nobody really cares about so I wont spend too much time talking about them.

Onto the more important stuff. Last summer I bought what I was told was a fully rebuilt GTI-R T28 turbo for $450 online and had Evan (sr20s14zenki) install it for me along with a Megan manifold only to find out that the turbo I bought wasn't infact rebuilt at all, but was actually blown and after hitting boost then shifting I could literally fill 3 lanes of traffic with blue smoke. Not cool. So after only driving the car for 2 months very lightely until I figured out what I wanted to do, I parked the car for winter and slowly started taking things apart.

    How the car sits now:

    Manifold and Turbo removed

The AC has been removed from the car, but I haven't finished removing all of the lines and components (the condensor, etc) and once I do that I will give the engine bay a real good degreasing to clean things up a bit, since as you can see its quite dirty.

    Turbo removed and cleaned up:

I had a few options for what I wanted to do. Sell the T28 and take a huge hit and buy an S15 T28, get my GTI-R rebuilt by alamo for $500, or put back the stock T25 and sell the whole car.

I decided to stick to my original plan and keep the GTI-R T28. The Pulsar GTI-R T28 comes with a big exhaust turbine being 0.86 A/R, where as the S15 turbo only has a 0.64 A/R exhaust turbine. In stock form the Pulsar GTI-R flows 33lb/min compared to the S15 turbo flowing 31lb/min. Now since I plan on upgrading the compressor housing (pics below) from a T3 to a T04B, I will be adding even more flow capability, enough for what I have read as being a nice even 300rwhp. Which is the goal of my build. Anyway onto the pics:

    KAMAK Dynamics T28 Rebuild Kit:

I didn't want to cheap out and buy a made in China rebuild kit for $40 that would blow within 1000km, so I purchased the KAMAK kit because it was apparently made in Japan, includes a beefy 360 degree thrust bearing, and was $120 shipped, so it had to be better than the Chinese $40 shipped kit right?

What was included in the kit:

As expected, the kit was very complete, and the c-clip retainers for the bearings (the anodized blue clips) seemed to be very strong.

Fresh bearing in the turbine side:

Fast forward a bit, thrust bearing removed

    Fresh c-clips:

New bearings soaking in Royal Purple 10W30 before being installed:

Fresh bearing on the compressor side:

New 360 degree thrust bearing installed, with the old 270 degree bearing beside it for comparison. *note the awesome eBay awl

The turbo is at Alamo for now getting re-balanced and having the backing plate on the CHRA swapped for one I got off of a blown S14 T28 BB (thanks Jackc) in order to upgrade my compressor housing from T3 to the S14 T28 BB's T04B housing:

S14 T04B housing on the left - GTI-R T3 housing on the right

I am really excited to have everything almost done as far as my turbo is concerned. Its really a shit feeling to spend around $700 getting a new turbo, new manifold, labour to install it only to have your car run worse than before .

Thats all I've got for now. I am currently waiting on a few parts to come in the mail, including a very cool intercooler kit unlike anything anybody in Calgary has on their S13 for sure, a Greddy/Trust Airinx kit for S13's with the S15 turbo (same housing as my T04B, the Airinx prevents the need for a reclock adaptor) for using a Z32 MAFS, and last but not least some stainless turbo lines.

Sucks to hear about the turbo man, shitty sellers should all be hung by their balls and eyelids then beaten to death with sticks.

Hope to see your car around in the summer. It's lookin good.

Thanks man, I was a little nervous about doing the turbo rebuild my self when even you said you would leave it to the professionals, but man am I glad I did. Saved around $300 doing it myself!

I did contact the seller, and he basically told me to go fuck myself. He claims he pulled it from his red top that spun a bearing, and that the turbo was fine. I wonder why exactly he spun a bearing *cough cough oil starvation from the turbo burning a fuck load of oil*

Watching you do my turbo actually helped a lot, I had that puppy off in no time.

No kidding, and I'll even be honest and say the thought crossed my mind to just resell it as rebuilt just as someone had done to me, because really, when you get scammed like this Paypal and Mastercard can't do anything about it because the quality of an item can never be guaranteed. I did the right thing tho and hopefully come spring time it will pay off!

Yah man, always do the right thing, im glad you did too. I believe strongly in Karma, what you do, comes back to you. Selling items you know are faulty is just stupid. What are you doing for a tune? I may be selling my PowerFC.

You know what, when I thought about it karma was the reason I didn't just resell it, because without giving any specific details maybe just maybe I had this coming to me based on a few transactions earlier in my life I'm not proud of.

Well, I was planning on running the stock MAFS for a bit, until I save up enough for either just a basic chip and tune, or a greddy emanage ultimate. A powerfc with commander would be very nice to have though, please let me know if you decide to sell!

Personally I think two-tone is the way to go with these cars. If the car was say, plain white I don't think it would look nearly as good. Thanks!!

How easy is it to tune the PFC? would I be able to hook up a wideband and street tune based on AFR? is it MAP or MAF based?

You would need a Dataloggit, which i have but cant sell, because Ayman still has powerFC in his car and will be pissed if i get rid of it. I can however bring it to Toma when you dyno tune. He can do you a tune in about an hour with the L-Jetro, which is mine.

Right now it has a decent tune for a 2860rs, 550cc injectors, and z32 maf.

    minor update:

I ran into a little complication, because after dropping off the turbo, Alamo told me they would be unable to balance the wheels because my turbine shaft was grooved and needed to be resurfaced otherwise it would damage the balancing machines bearings. So now the bearing housing has been re-bored, the turbine shaft machined, and new oversized bearings have been installed. With a rebalance my bill came up to $311, which I think is very reasonable for everything they did for me. They also didn't even charge me to switch the backing plate from my blown GT2560R over to my GTI-R T28, so now I have a T04B compressor housing to match the big 0.86 A/R turbine

Just a little teaser pic. Got my badass GT Factory intercooler in the mail today. Should be installed by the end of the night if all goes well.

Finished installing my GT Factory high mount intercooler. I opted for this kit over a front mount intercooler for a number of reasons. First, the high mount intercooler has super short piping with mostly straight piping. This should help give me instant boost response. Second of all, I dont like how front mount intercoolers look with the non-aero silvia bumper. I have no progress pictures unfortunatley of what I had to do to install the intercooler, but some metal had to be removed from the radiator support in order to fit the core. The core then mounts to existing holes in the radiator support, although one tab didn't line up

mostly everything from the front end removed.

    intercooler hiding behind the headlights

    cold side done.

I'm just waiting on exhaust wrap ties for my manifold, as well as my stainless radiator and then the real fun begins.
