Default Ruts - DOES ADDING SNOW MAKE THEM LARGER?

    Simple Question.

Does piling snow in ruts increase the size of ruts by pushing the snow to the side when people drive through it? (Think of tires going through the ruts, does the snow move to the side, out of the way?)

(In your opinion or scientifically backed knowledge)

Ruts are generally chunks of ice. If you fill the rut once, most of the snow will get displaced, unless you continue to top off the rut with snow so it can eventually get packed and turn to ice.

Your questions is a little ambiguous. You should phrase it in a more simple manner for those who may not try to make sense of it.

They may read the titel and think they are answering the question of whether or not we should fill the ruts.

But your first post poses the question of whether or not filling in ruts makes them worse...You will get skewed results witht he current set methinks.

You should edit your first post read one of the following, for the sake of clarity:

Does filling a rut make the rut worse?

Should you fill in a rut?

Or, change the title of the thread.

I would think it depends on how you fill the rut. If you put snow in there, melted it and let it freeze, it would build up eventually and there would be no rut. But to fill it in with snow, its not going to do anything as the salt off the roads makes the snow not pack well (feels wierd walking on salted snow compared to untouched snow). Unsalted snow packs and would probably work.

Simple answer is no. Put snow in, it will get pushed back out. Period.

the road is filled with rutted ice. to fill the ruts, you would have to fill the ruts with water/snow and let it freeze into ice. adding loose snow will only increase the rut depth.

i agree that the thread and poll are poorly worded, and ask two entirely opposite questions. thus, some respondents are answering the thread title question, and some are answering the question in the first post. therefore, the poll results are invalid.

the same people answering "no" to the thread title will answer "yes" to the first post. therefore, the poll could result in a 50-50 tie between yes and no, even though there was 100% agreement among respondents.

i appreciate the effort Tarrantula, but this poll is pretty

The snow will be pushed back out. A wheel path will always been created, wether it be a snowy road, gravel road, or even a rutted highway. Even paving the ruts on a highway is tough, because if you let traffic drive on it too quickly or make the depth of the fill too much, it will squeeze out.

So in order to avoid it... the rut must be filled in stages, and after each stage the rut fill is hardened.

I haven't voted, because I do not want to skew the results. But. I agree that shovelling new snow into ruts could only contribute to making them worse...though I do not think they will contribute in a very significant way.

And I think we can all agree that it's unreasonable to drive a lowered civic in the winter.

yes, totally unreasonable, even if it's only slightly lowered and still rides higher than a lot of other cars at stock height...

lets not drag this out, the fact that my car is lowered, is completely irrelevant

It's not the size that matters, it's the taste it leaves in your mouth.

When I got home last night I noticed while pulling up to my drive way that one of my neighbors cleared their lawn and dumped all the snow in front of house to fill the ruts.

Needless to say, I got stuck trying to pull into my driveway. Yes I drive a civic, and no its not lowered. Took about 5 minutes to dig myself out.

Based on that experience...I'd say No, It does not work.
What kind of birdhouse can you build with popsicles, roofies, and a rubber mallet?

Who clears their lawn and dumps it onto the road? Thats messed.

I try not to drive in the ruts, rather on them and flatten the center and sides down too.

You can't fill ruts. They will always get soft and always push aside again. To be completely honest, I am REALLY surprised any of you could think any other way... That snow will not stay there long enough for it to get hard, as well I heard you guys are chinooking like crazy, so no.

I have dealt with ruts all the time. I used to drive 50 ton rock trucks, and ruts would get big enough that you would get stuck on them. All you did was straddle the ruts so it would always stay smooth until you reached the point that it wouldn't compress no more.

This is a really stupid thread...
