Default Pins found in products at CO-OP (Oakridge)

A Calgary grocery store has discovered more pins in its products, this time pushed into plastic juice bottles.

The Calgary Co-op store at Oakridge Centre in the city's southwest was closed for several hours Monday after pins were found in some bakery items. A sweep of the store by employees turned up more pins in bulk food items and in cheese.

On Tuesday morning, employees uncovered more of the pins.

"Before our centre opened this morning at Oakridge we did another sweep and we did find a couple of more products that have the metal objects in them. Those included some of our fresh juices in our produce department," said spokeswoman Sarah Boutron.

She doesn't know if the pins, which she describes as the kind used in sewing, were missed during Monday's sweep or are new.

Calgary Co-op did not receive any threats and the company doesn't know why anyone would tamper with food products, she said.

"We don't know why and that's why we have the police involved. It's a criminal investigation," she said. "We have upped our security. We have also made sure that all of our employees are looking out."

The store has recalled bulk food and bakery items, as well as packaged items. Customers can return suspect goods for a full refund.

There have been no reports of any injuries or problems at other Calgary Co-op stores.

"This is an isolated incident as far as we know. We have let our other centres know to be diligent in spotting these type of things," said Boutron.

    Shoppers not concerned
Shoppers heading into the store on Tuesday weren't concerned about finding pins in their groceries.

"I was shocked, but it was handled very well. They shut the store down," said Helen Bennett. "It's just a sad commentary on what is happening in the world today."

Shopper Lisa Khamis said she wasn't surprised to hear about problems with bulk food bins.

"I personally tend to stay away from bulk food items, that is something I just do personally, I would prefer the packaged items," she said. "Anything could be dropped in there, whether it is hair, or insects, or anything."

She commended Calgary Co-op staff for acting so quickly on Monday.

"They did what they should have done. They let us know immediately, which is very important," said Khamis.

shouldn't it be easy to find out who did it after a simple review of security tapes?

^ So many factors involved with that.

Tapes overwritten, cameras not focused, subject with hat or hoody on, etc. etc.

    People are just nuts.

This was the same thing that was happening to Halloweeners sporadically in the US a few years ago.

I mean really some people are just bad. It doesn't really matter the situation (or income level, or age group, or any other distinction) - We all have to live together.

I can't see a customer doing this too easily - I'd imagine they are probably going to be scrutinizing the employees.

I used to work with the company that is contracted to look after security issues in the calgary co-op stores and it was a fucking joke how little initiative co-op puts into security of the stores. many of the stores have very few cameras. under 10 for alot of stores. they just try to make up for it by using "dummy domes" so i doubt this individual would be caught on camera.

Hahah, I used to work in that place for a couple of years, crazy to think I missed all the fun. There are a lot of ways to waste your time but shoving sewing needles into food shouldn't be one of them...

If they find whomever did this, that person should be charged with attempted murder, or something terrorism related.

    News Calgary & Alberta
Discovery of tampered produce prompts Co-op closure
By KATIE SCHNEIDER - Calgary Sun

    Last Updated: February 18 2010, 5:35am

Three days after a tub of margarine was found with a pin-sized hole through its lid, the Oakridge Co-op shut down Wednedsay night when produce items were discovered tampered.

For a third time in less than a month, police are investigating additional evidence of food tampering at Calgary Co-op’s Oakridge Centre on Southland Dr. and 24 St. S.W., in this case in the produce section.

This latest incident comes three days after a customer found a tub of margarine with a pin-sized hole pierced straight through the lid, plastic safety film, and deep into the food inside Sunday night.

Though Co-op was hesitant to call the margarine incident tampering, it conducted a thorough search of the store, examined the product and notified police.

And last month, sewing needles, pins and buttons were found in juice bottles, cheese and bread, leading to an extensive inspection and voluntary closure of the store.

A Co-op spokeswoman had said the lack of a needle in the margarine had officials with the grocery chain hoping there was no connection with the spate of January food tamperings.

The store voluntarily closed again Wednesday night and was scheduled to reopen Thursday morning after conducting another thorough search.

Calgary Co-op is asking customers who have recently purchased items from the Oakridge Centre to be diligent in checking their items for any tampering. And customers who are unsure of a product they purchased may return it to the centre for a full refund.

A Co-op spokeswoman did not return calls Wednesday night.

I bet this is fucking annoying the shit out of the employees.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was one of the staff just being bored or "fighting back" for some strange reason.
