Default linux - remote admin by email?

    G'day all,

Getting some emails from my linux server at home today... And rather frustrated that I hadn't thought of this sooner... Its great it tells me it's having issues... But I can't do anything about it - not having access to telnet/ssh/vnc/etc at work...

Is there a way to configure sendmail to execute a script (ie one that shuts the computer down) on receipt of an email from [email protected] using a specific string in the subject (use the subject line as a password / command interpreter basically).

    Thanks in advance,

    Andy

Sounds like an invitation to get your box hacked.

How about any of these standard solutions:

Port forward port 80 to 22, or 443 to 22. Most institutions don't block those outgoing ports.

    Run SSH on your phone.

If you are already running a webserver on those ports, then there are lots of virtual shell packages out there you could use.

Not looking to have full remote control - thinking mostly just shutdown. So next time there's at least the option to have the computer shutdown before hard drives fry etc... Do I really worry about someone shutting down my server when I'm not around? Not really...

My phone doesn't do SSH Damn company phones that have no features...

Perhaps every smart phone; but not all phones.

All phones; anything that does Midp 1.0 or 2.0 so basically any phone produced in the last 5 or 10 years. Not just smartphones.

I'm confused, why would your hard drives "fry"?

most phones have java, and i had ssh on my Samsung A920, not a special phone by any means. Perhaps it's worth an attempt before dismissing it.

    Company phone, all locked down...

Not sure what happened with the server yet - CPU and primary cooling fan both shut off for unknown reasons (yet both run if power is directly applied). Thus the first couple emails about temperature... Then as I'm sitting wondering what I can do - get the smart failure warning from the /usr drive - an old 40gig I had lying around... Could be coincidence, could be heat related - don't know...
