took freaking long enough....
+1^ it was bound to happen, at least they held on for this long, now will PSN security pull the ban stick like XBL for pirated stuff, will they even be able to tell?
^^ Doubt it because when I had a PSP they worked online and I think PS2 games did as well. He seems credible but who knows if it will ever come out. That is some sick security though, I think Xbox was hacked in 5-7 months.
IMO Geohot is a douche. He is a whiney attention whore that is wasting his talent on trying to get his 15 min.
Im sure he has indeed hacked the PS3 but i doubt we will every see anything come of it.
Most likely he will try and pull another un-teathered jb stunt like he has in the past.
Time to buy a PS3....
This was posted on Reddit and Slashdot and the comments there are disheartening.
Apparently the work he has done to hack the PS3 is barely the beginning and once he starts tinkering with it he will begin running into the other security measures that are a lot harder to defeat.
I don't know a whole lot about the hardware security features embedded in the PS3, but unless he is able to over-write the hypervisor on boot he has nothing of use.
He admitted that he had not managed to hack the whole system, including the protected memory, but had worked out ways to trick the console into doing what he wanted.

He released it .. http://geohotps3.blogspot.com/2010/0...r-platter.html .. hopefully something like XBMC comes out
be prepared to pay $30 for one blank blu ray disc
PS3 does have a rather large hard drive, that'd be the best way to make use of this.Originally posted by yue

Still this is a long way off. Hats off to sony, PS3 is the first console to have zero piracy rate this far into its life.
or $32 for 10 Verbatims, like I doOriginally posted by yue

what a real winner
at 17 he unlocked the iphone
this guy has such incredible potential to make crazy $$ developing system or programming securities, but instead he does shit like this..what a waste of talent

worst part is definitely when the dudes smacking it with his dick like that inside out anus owes his dick some money.
I hate the guy. They kicked him off the iPhone dev team after a month, because he was such an attention whore. No doubt he is pretty smart, but so are thousands of other hackers. You never hear anything about the guys who released the xbox softmods? Or the dreamcast mods? Or any one of a thousand other great hacks.Originally posted by spike98

I think he's way over rated as well. He got all the credit for the iPhone jailbreak/unlock, but he didn't really discover the security hole at all. It was a well known vulnerability in the community. Yet somehow he ended up with all the credit because he was the first to put it all together in a nice little package (for that version of iPhone & firmware).
The PS3 hack is clever. But it's a small piece of the puzzle. Nobody knows how many layers of security are involved in the PS3, and nobody knows if the hypervisor even has a security vulnerability that is exploitable.
Plus, I'm quite certain the HV has been dumped before. This new method is a much easier way to do it though, and it allows for write access which opens the door for modchips, assuming the remaining security can be broken.
Looks like he has perma-hacked the ps3 now, almost a year to the day he first hacked it:

He got the keys with help from failoverflow. Seems like he is an attention whore. The PSP is open now too because those keys were in the PS3 as well lol.

The only way to fight piracy now is thru on-line services like Steam and XBL which is why Sony is teaming with Steam. They already know they cannot match XBL and would bleed too much $ to fight MS on that front. May as well partner with someone.
so is the "hack" a bannable offence on psn?
^ this would be awesome if this works along PSN
I personally would like to thank this would be "attention whore" for releasing the info freely to everyone on the internet.Originally posted by beecue

He could have gone the way of the Iphone Dev team and release daily twitter updates about how awesome the new jailbreak is for 3 straight months and never release a working version.
