Calgary police to crack down on jaywalking
    Two pedestrians killed last month

Last Updated: Tuesday, February 2, 2010 | 5:47 PM MT

There will be more Calgary police and transit officers walking downtown streets Wednesday morning in an effort to crack down on jaywalking.

The move comes after two people were killed last month crossing the street, police said. They say 35 per cent of all fatal collisions last year involved pedestrians.

"And those are preventable collisions," Const. Peter Adria, of the police traffic unit, said Tuesday. "So, this initiative is designed to build awareness in the community so that we can prevent these collisions in the future."

Officers will be informing people about the dangers of jaywalking, he said, and fining those caught illegally crossing the street.

Fines for jaywalking range from $25 to $60, Adria said.

Officers will patrol downtown streets from about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday through to the end of the morning rush hour.

On Jan. 7, Ryan Avery Fox, 34, was hit by a Dodge Caliber at 7 a.m. while crossing Ninth Avenue S.E. in the middle of the block, near the bridge over the Elbow River.

Fox was taken to Foothills Hospital with serious injuries and later died.

Police did not charge the driver because Fox was trying to cross the street at an unsafe spot

Is it the one day of the year that jaywalking is illegal again already?

Nothing like good publicity. The CPS sure could use some, and it looks like they found a way to do it.

If you're knowingly jaywalking, get hit by a car, then it's your fault.

What are the priorities? The Toronto Police did the same thing recently.

I wish they would fine ASSHOLES who start walking even when the red hand is flashing. DT traffic would be so much smoother if people would only walk when they are supposed to.

Me personally, I'm happy that the CPS is working on these stupid jawalkers...

I can't tell you how many time's I've almost smoked someone with my side mirror because they cross illegally, or run out onto the street. Or cross at intersections where crossing isn't allowed...

    serious?

    you actually hit people?

i think the issue is partly to blame on you not paying attention either.

thats like goin through a playground zone even though your goin 30 km/h and you hit a kid running across the st.

the kid jay walked still but you still hit the kid

actually i am, if you ever walked DT in the mornings and after work you would see how many idiots there really are.

so yes i am comparing an adult to a child

and hitting someone is still the driver not paying attention.

driving dt you got to be aware even if its not jay walkers as the couriers on bikes are even worst

    One word. Chinatown.
Oh, that's not even the half of it. ASSHOLES start crossing on THE LAST FLASH.

Oh yea... because I'm really expecting EVERY SINGLE PERSON ON THE SIDEWALK to be dashing out in front of my car at any given point in time. Anybody over the age of 6 should know who wins in Giant Metal Car vs. Human. You might be able to win against this .

BTW Retard that died on 9th ave jaywalking, good riddance, And to the driver, I'm very sympathetic he had to experience trauma like that.

Sounds like a money grab to make (assuming they are actually giving out tickets which I heard was the case on the radio). 35% of collisions involved pedestrians? We have some stupid pedestrians in Calgary. If they're too stupid to look both ways, they deserve to get hit.

you mean we shouldn't pull homicide detectives off of their files to write tickets? That's crazy.

Or could it be the traffic guys who do write tickets being assigned this? That would be even more crazy.

Even paying attention it can be hard to keep track of whats going on. Theres alot of people walking/driving dt in rush hour. I dont know how hard it is to wait until it's ok to cross. If people get hit crossing when they shouldnt be, it is their own fault.

wow, I jaywalked this morning by the bottle depot on 10ave....there was a car a couple blocks away that saw me do it - ended up being a cop car. They slowed down but didn't stop, guess I'm lucky. Maybe they don't care about that spot, there's a lot of jaywalking there but not so many cars.
Several studies have investigated the relationship between intelligence and the degree of religious belief (excluding humanism), with most showing an inverse correlation between intelligence averages and the "importance of religion" to the testee.
