They are required to get someone impartial. Just try to find out something about the person (if possible) first, and say something to condemn him right away. They won't call back.

Well imagine if instead of writing that letter to the editor, she just posts on a car forum for car enthusiasts. That's Kritafo.

    You're paid like $50 a day.

BTW you just got called right now for selection among A LOT of others, chances of you getting picked and actually making it into the actual Jury are pretty slim as it is.

My sister got one and I went to the court centre telling them she's out of town. Which was true. But I didn't see them do anything to verify what I said before giving her an exemption.

    serious?

    thats it?

is a valid reason that you can't afford to be away from work because you get paid more at work?

Nope you can't use that as an excuse, unless I guess if you can show that it would be hugely detrimental to you or something, then I'd guess you may be able to get out. (Like the above example, feeding the whole family issue). Just saying 'oh I get more money at work so I can't (what job doesn't pay more than $50 a day?) won't cut it.

They want the defendant to get a fair trial, which includes the right to get judged by the jury of his peers. Plus that's why they call it jury DUTY as in sort of an obligation that you're only exempted from in very few circumstances.

Although from what I've heard people have gotten out using the stupidest things and I guess they are aware of this which is why they call like a few hundred people for each case to begin with, when they only need 12 people and couple of back-up's in some cases.

On that argument then can't you say it's a free country and you don't want to go?

Well the counter is sort of like you are citizens of Canada and it's your obligation to partake in activities that are deemed of such importance. You now sorta like when they make people take the citizenship oath that goes like 'my allegiance to my country and fulfil it's duties and obligations etc etc'. Moreover we live in a country where the rule of law prevails. So you can't really just say, 'I don't want to, so you can't make me.' It's an offence to lie to get out of jury duty as well, but it's one of those things that everyone just overlooks.

Yes, seriously. Was NOT born in canada so i was totally unaware of what jury duty was. I dont fall the legal system all that much, nor have i ever had anyone in my family or in my group of friends ever get a summons to appear for jury duty.

    From the Alberta Courts website.

What if I fail to obey the Juror Summons?
Failure to obey the Juror Summons is a punishable offence. You may be fined up to $1000 or sentenced to a jail term of up to one month, or both. Also, it is unlawful for your employer to refuse permission for you to be absent from work for jury selection or service

Just say you hate whatever race the defendant is, use as many derogatory terms as possible. You'll be out in no time.
