String him along, he will send the cheque, then just before you get it he will tell you the amount was wrong and to wire transfer the money back to him, bla bla bla.

Ask him to wire transfer the 3700, I'm sure that will end the cherade real fast..........

I thought this might be an old thread I already responded to.

But... nope. Yet another person feels he should post this identical scenario on Beyond to see if others thought it was a scam.

Believe me OP - it is. It doesn't matter HOW or WHY they are looking to scam you. Just the fact they are is reason to walk away.

This is whats gonna happen in sequence:

    1. he sends you the check
    2. five days later the check will clear and you will get your cash
    3. you call him and he comes to pick up his vehicle then he drive it back to where he is at right now.
    4. 3 weeks later the bank will call you three times a day to let you know that you have to return the 3000+ dollars you have taken out in cash because the check is fake and now you are responsible for fraud.
    5. if you want to hire a lawyer to explain, the bank has 30+ lawyers to fight it.
    6. you loose your vehicle and then you have problems coming from the bank.

the first three sounds legitmate but its always the result that you have to think about risking. Its kinda like having sex without condoms.

Always call the bank that the cheque is made out from. They will let you know if it's legit or not.

He'll send you more money than is owing, then ask you to send him the difference.

These bank drafts are good fakes and take a long time to bounce. It's worth knowing that if you do get scammed, your own bank actually only has a limited amount of time to either honour the cheque or bounce it. If they go past that time limit, they're liable, even if the cheque ultimately bounces. Not like you'd want to go several rounds in court to prove the issue, but you do have a case.

I usually respond to these ads by offering to send the car to the buyer at their designated address, in a crate and along with a spanner wrench for easy re-assembly. So far, every scammer I've sent that to has been fine with that arrangement, as long as I'll provide the details to them for payment.

That's always a pretty good sign it's bullshit...

Angry DEFINITELY a car scam - report to the RCMP

This Michael Brown tried the same thing with me. Selling my car on Autotrader. Same email. Same story. I had him send me a cheque anyway so I could report him to the cops as it sounded REALLY fishy. I was asking $2,950 for the car and he sent me a cheque for $9,950. I reported it to the RCMP as I had heard of this type of scam before - they send you more than the vehicle is worth and then have you just deposit the cheque and send them the difference once the cheque has cleared. In a month or two the counterfeit cheque is discovered and you are out the money you sent to the guy.

The RCMP took all the info and told me the cheque would be counterfeit. Strangely enough they didn't want the original cheque so i think they must already have a lot on this guy.

This Michael Brown has emailed three times since and just called my cell phone to see if the cheque had cleared. As if I'm going to deposit it - just ignore this guy and if you do get a cheque DON'T deposit it.

People. If you are selling/buying something and you have to ask yourself, "I wonder if this is a scam? I'm not sure?" it is a scam and not worth your time.

But on the other hand, great thread, will read again.

I'd just want the phony cheque to hang on my wall... hmmm... it could go next to my $1,000,000,000 Zimbabwean bank note.
