Default Went to CYEG to take some pics (Soviet giant!)

I was down at the airport today for work and I just happened to stumble upon this jet sitting on the apron. I rushed home from work, grabbed my camera and hurried back, afraid it would be gone when I got there... Thankfully it was still parked! And I got there just in time for sunset!

It is of course, an Antonov 124-100. A transport built back in the days of the Soviet Union, it's the second largest aircraft in the world, only to it's bigger brother the An-225. It can take off weighing over 830,000 pounds. A seriously impressive machine.

My love of aircraft is no secret, so I stuck around and shot some others as well. I go to the airport every morning with work and FedEx always has a beautiful old 727-200 freighter there. On Monday this week, I noticed that they'd replaced it with a nice new 757-200.

    Sun went behind the clouds

Snapped a nice Cessna Citation 550 through the fence.

The Sun came back out as this WestJet 737-700 was departing off the ramp.

Hope you guys like them. If it's nice on Friday, I may spend a few hours shooting out there, trying to catch departing and arriving flights.

Big thanks to Matt@STRD for his 55-200 lens as well. Thanks, buddy!

Nah, I ran the reg # on Airliners.net.

It was OLD, haha. That said, and I like the 757, but the 727 is so much cooler.

    Great pics OP!

Its also at YYC on a regular basis almost now, a few times a month at least.

FYI its not the second aircraft in the world in terms of MTOW, the 747-8 freighter can take off weighing nearly a million pounds (an insane amount).

airsprints 560 , you gotta start using the FAA and T.C civil/commercial aircraft registers, airliners.net is usually only 90% correct.

maybe i should start taking pictures out at YBW, not many turbines but alot of 'oddities' i've seen and wish i had me 40D with me.

Oh, I wasn't talking about physical age, lol.

The 757 in your pic has almost 60,000 hours on it, the normal 727 that flies to YEG only has 35,000.

FedEx is pulling their 727s out of service pretty fast though... I doubt I'll ever see it again...

    Nice pics !!

I hope FEDEX starts using the B757 in YYC too.I've spent some time riding around in First Air's and KFC's B727's cockpit jumpseats, and they are very cool. But I'm getting tired of being woken up at 0430 am by those freight dogs...

    Awsome pics!

I grew up a few miles away from an Air Force base in Europe where flying low over households was considered ok. I miss seeing planes flying couple hundred feet above...

Very nice photos. Are you going to submit them to airliners.net or similar?

For looking up aircraft, besides the official lookup sites from the governments of US and Canada, you might want to also try airframes.org - it's kept fairly up to date by aviation enthusiasts.

There is a hobbyist group using what is called a "RadarBox" to track aircraft in a fashion very similar to what a real ACC sees on their screen. There's one user in Calgary area and one in Edmonton area. You will see their results posted to the Internet on both http://www.radarvirtuel.com (Google Maps overlay) and http://www.airnavlive.com (similar but with better individual tracking ability).
