Great start to the Olympics! Guy crashed in Luge. He's in life threatening condition. EDIT: He's just been pronounced dead

Slightly graphic images in below link:

EDIT 2: IOC killed YouTube video. Huffington Post has new video up.

Seems like a pretty dangerous setup, shouldn't there be some shielding on an exit of a corner that has metal poles?

I'm sure they'll have something up overnight. Keep in mind that most luge tracks are inherently unsafe if somebody crashes. This is just less logical than some other ones, and an especially difficult track from what I've read.

This won't end well with all the talk about how sketchy the course is, and how athletes from other countries weren't given as much time as they think they should have gotten on the course to prepare.

They had an experienced Canadian female luge competitor (can't remember her name) on CBC radio a few weeks ago. She was coming back from a bad crash (on another course, IMS), and said she was scared to start at the top of this track for a long time. Said the track is very intimidating and difficult.

Wow, i can't believe this wasn't addressed before. How can this be overlooked. How can any Luger want to go on that track knowing they are putting their lives in danger.

IMO ANY luger that goes down the track knows that there is a huge amount of risk associated with the sport.
