Mass Effect 2 without Mass Effect 1?

I haven't played Mass Effect... to those of you guys who have played both, should I pick up 1 and play through it first before picking up 2?

Anyone finish the games already and want to sell me their old copy? I should be back in Calgary late next week...

There's already a thread, and yes, pick up #1 first. It's not necessary for the story but it will make you enjoy the game a lot more.
