Default Weird Camera set up on Nosehill

Today was a perfect day to take my dog for a walk on nose hill. It was so warm and not to many clouds in the sky.

We were walking from the Edgemont parking lot at the top of shag. Half an hour into the walk going towards the downtown builds I noticed a weird tripod sitting in the middle of nowhere. I walked through the deep snow towards it and sure enough it was two tripods with a nice camera with a massive lens on it, lens was probably 3 feet long. There was a wire hooked up to it and bunch up beside it but stuck out towards the airport direction.
I looked throught the camera and it pointed at a tree about 1 km away or more. I could barely see the tree with my eye. Nobody was anywhere to be seen, a couple people walking dogs and what not. I looked through the lens again and a dude was looking at me from behind that tree it was focused on.
I was soo freaked out at this point but soo confused as to why this camera was set up like that. I looked throught it again and suddenly the camera started taking pictures. Weirdest thing ever.
I walked back to the path and started walking towards this guy. The guy started walking back towards the camera. So I waited around cause I wanted to know what he was doing. When he was close enough to me, I asked him what he was taking pictures of. He said himself from 1.5 kms away. He also said he was in school for photography.
Its just so weird for someone to be soo far away from a camera this expensive. I took a picture of the camera and the set up.

That's really odd, not the camera sitting on 2 tripods but the fact that this guy was taking pics of himself from so far away.

Anybody know which class this is for and why the hell you need to take pics of yourself from so far away?

Very trusting guy. With that sort of distance, he probably wouldn't even know if you took it off the tripod or not.

That would probably get some interesting results. Probably just experimenting with the lens.

Mount looks VERY small. I'm guessing it's either a cheapo T-mount tele or some kind of small refractor telescope with a t-mount adapter. I'd guess it's probably $100-200 unless I totally miss my guess.

Wow, trusting. Anyone can just run with the setup and off leash dogs could have done some major damage.

I'm after one of the tripod and the lense. I'll leave the body in the snow.
