    Default Dog Food Brands?

    Hey Everyone,

Just have some quesitons for all you dog owners on the forum.

What type of dog food do you feed your dog?

    Recommendations and why?

Any issues or anything I should stay away from?

I have a 1 year old bichon toy poodle. I started feeding her Nutrience since she was a puppy. I researched and Nutrience from my understanding is supposed to be considered an Ultra Supreme Dog food. No probs whatsoever with it.

Anyways, friends were telling us that Nutro is better, so i changed her over to the small breed ultra supreme holistic food. i've read and gone through the ingredients on all brands, and the Nutor holistic seems to be the best overall, even better than Nutrience. Only thing i've noticved though since changing her over is that on Nutro, she drinks a hella more water and poo's tons. But her poos are not runny, just a little softer but more often than usual.

I did some research and there's a lot of bad things about Nutro with recalls and such. Not sure if this is just people jumping on a bandwagon or something, but there's 50/50 for good and abd comments. Thing is she seems to really recall like this food though, only stuff where she eats it all. And again, teh ingredients for their dry and soft foods are the best.

Soooo.......anyone have any probs with Nutro?

And what brand do you all recommend?

    Thanks!!!!

Yeah well I wonder how they get the soft flowing caramel inside the Caramilk bar but you don't see me making a god damn thread about it. Slap your wife Baygirl, straighten him out.

I would try www.dogfoodanalysis.com and look under one of their 5 or 6 star foods. I feed my boxer and amstaff oreijn sp?? brand and they like it alot... some dogs will get the runs from their food due to the higher protein levels. Oreijn is essentially feeding your dog a raw diet in dry food form.

You might also want to see how your dogfood ranks with them.

Thanks hukgwai for the site. i took a look and the food i feed the bitch is ranked in teh 4 star category.

She lovevs the food!!!! I'm just concerned with all their recalls and such....but its always mixed reviews. Seems its either really good or really bad.

I highly recommend the book "Food Pets Die For", quite the eye opener on pet food.

A four star food is still a great dog food. It's interesting to see many "high end" brands as 1 and 2 star foods. A really good bang for the buck food is the Costco Kirkland food which is made by diamond pet foods. Speaking of which, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul is a really popular and well ranked food also made by diamond pet foods.

I think that if your dog likes the food and there are no problems with the food, I would stick with it.

    table scraps?

honestly i dont know but i really believe scraps to be just as good as anything in dog food, my family has had 4 dogs (im a cat person tho) but of the 4, 3 were farm dogs that just got scraps while the one that lived in the house got bagged food. they all went regularly to the vet for checkups etc but the indoor bag food fed dog was the only one with constant health problems. while the other lived and died without any problems.

I just figure at least with scraps i know what they are eating, like liver, or pork, or beef, with gravy not made out of a package etc. i figure its probably closest to what they would eat if they were wild.

call me horrible but i guess if its good enough for me its good enough for a dog. not the other way around.

Typically I feed mine acanna. Same manufacture as Orijen but it has more carbs in it. I wouldnt be as picky about it but I really notice there is much less mess to clean up with the higher end foods, and less poo to clean up is a really good thing.

I alternate between Acana and Taste of the Wild for my Cocker-Poodle. Just go to a good pet supply store (I find the guys at Unleashed on 14th Ave very knowledgeable), and ask for their advice.

I'm feeding my Frenchie a brand called Blue Buffalo, it's a holistic brand and my puppy loves it. I got him the Lamb and brown rice because he gets allergies when he's eating any other type.

My brother is feeding his Chihuahua the Nutro brand and the dog has unlimited amounts of energy. He's been with the brand since he was a baby and so far nothings wrong.

I always thought it was interesting that "Iams", a brand of dog food, means "dog" in the little known Philippino dialect of Waray-Waray.

    And Blue Buffalo too.

I'm just concerned cuz she drinks so much water that the nutro might be too high in protein for her....leading to kidney problems later down the road.

But yeah, since she's been on the Nutro, she seems pretty happy and energetic too. Not sure what i should do....

Any better pet store (not the chain stores) will have a good selection of higher quality foods.

    +1

I get the fish one. Pacifica I think its called. Skin and fur is so nice of this diet. I also like the fact that their a local company.

Also the dogs LOVE the food. It has a much stronger smell then others and my dog just loves it.
