Default civic died on the way home wtf

Car is an 03 Civic with just over 110,000 km.

I was driving home, came around the corner and it felt like I had sliped it into 5th instead of third because I had no power. I droped it into neutral and reved it to slip it back into third but no revs at all.

Now all the electrical is working just fine but when I turn it over it fires up for a couple cranks and dies.

Any ideas where to start looking?

sounds like failing fuel delivery. might be a fuel pump, relay, or wiring, possibly a clogged fuel filter or injectors

I agree with rickdatuner, it sounds like an issue I had with my wrx. It was my fuel pump that failed.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I was under the impression that late model Civic engines use a DISTRIBUTORLESS ignition system.

I agree with the people who mention fuel pump. You could also try to query the ECU by shorting out 2 pins and looking at the CEL code.

when I put the keys in I can hear the fuel pump, then after it sputers and dies the exhaust smells incredibly rich like it's not getting burnt at all.

is it typical that the timing belt would go after 110,000km?

Timing belts are supposed to be done every 60 000-1XX 000 km. Thats why they want to do it.

i believe for the civic. if you need to replace the crankshaft sensor, you need to removed the timing belt cover.

so you might as well do the timing belt for a combo time for the crankshaft sensor

I just did the timing belt on a buddies civic of the same gen, in order to get at the crank sensor you are right at the timing belt. The last thing you remove before you pull the belt is actually the crank sensor. My as well do it while they are in there.

My buddy had a similar problem but sadly his tensioner pulley failed and jumped the belt bending all his valves.

well that's just my luck I guess. The tensioner spring came loose and got sucked into the engine. They are talking about re building the head and not knowing if the pistons are messed or not.

The recommendation is to do an engine swap. WTF they want $3000 for the same engine swap. Do I let them put a 113hp POS engine back in or start shoping around for a k20 to swap in.....
