TELUS will be providing new homes with FTTH

TELUS will be providing Fiber to the Home (FTTH) to new homes in Calgary starting on April 1, 2010.

Hopefully other will follow and push into older neighbourhoods !

Pretty sure Shaw uses Telus's existing fiber anyway.

Sure hope my new home being built right now in Cranston has this. I know it has the structured wiring, but hope it has the fiber drop in place.

Ahaha, no. Shaw has many kilometers of fiber bundles to their nodes, along with a SONET ring between their hubsites. Look up Shaw's Bigpipe coverage in town, or have a peek at http://www.shawbusinesssolutions.ca/...etwork_map.jsp

That all looks like backbone, I was talking about last mile. I could still be wrong but I was under the impression that Telus has been laying fiber in communities for years.

Telus has been doing this for at least the last year or two. It was discussed in the Shaw FTTH thread. Even though they have fiber in many homes only some communities are able to get the service. Currently I have fiber in my house with no idea of when it is scheduled to light up. Hopefully this service will offer lower latency and better ping consistency. I won't be switching unless they improve their bandwidth options. 25/1 is pitiful for fiber service, and compared to other FTTH offerings is way below par. It's not even competative locally, where Shaw is offering 100/5.

It's more about HDTV than Internet right now and not running copper to homes. Shaw HDTV is ok but there's still some problems and their on screen menu looks and feels like it's from the 80s.
