    Default WHS and power management

I have a custom made WHS. I want to find an add-in that allows me to have it sleep after it has been idle for a given time. If I access it using either of my computer or access it through the xbox I would like it to wake back up.

I have tried AHMS and lights out but havent figured it out quite yet.

when you figure it out... let me know. I just leave my WHS running the whole time now. I tried a few add ins (ie: lights out) but couldnt get it the way i wanted it.

Instead, i am just using intel's power management that came w/ my motherboard to spin down cpus/hard drives/fans when idle.

haha yeah see me too. I couldnt figure out how to get lights out to work properly. Even the desktop client when I tell it to suspend it just sits there like a dumb ass.

    Yeah, I need this too.

I figured out that it costs about $15 / month to run the home server in my basement.

As for you thread on WGS forums.

For some reason, I think it is the replication, transfer speeds are hit or miss.

I have a 1GB lan and sometimes transfers slow to a crawl. It doesn't matter if I am uploaded or downloading. Most of the time it is lightning fast.

Yeah I think your correct about the transfer rates as mine was great unless I was transfering large amounts of data.

I was transfering 160GB in one go and that is when it sat at 2MB/Sec.

I am a little worried about the power management, I may have to do BIOS settings for now.

Okay so a bit of an update. I got it to turn off as a timed event using lights out. I had to go into the hardware settings (control panel -> system -> Hardware -> nic) and turned OFF allow this device to be put to sleep to save power.

The timed hibernation worked and calendar turn on and off worked. Next step is to try and get the WOL working.

Kind of defeats the purpose of a "server" if you power it on and off all the time. HDDs spinning up is the hardest operation HDD will do, the more you do it the higher the probability of failure. At work we have over 200 servers and once a year we have to do a complete power down for power maintenance, every single time we have at least a single drive failure due to the exact reason I mentioned above. I got a 12 disk NAS at home and it doesn't eat up $15 a month for me..

Does your NAS go into any power saving mode? I build my server out of an old Compaq computer so I set video to go to sleep after 1 minute, etc.

What are you trying for WOL?

I installed a free WOL from Solar Winds software but I haven't gotten around to playing with it seeing how I just leave my WHS on 24hrs. I mostly use my WHS for backup and remote access to my computer (I'm not home much).

    Solar Winds free WOL

ADM magic packet is an other popular one too...

I was thinking of making a tread for people with WHS... info for beyonders with WHS to see what other people have and the addins.... What do you think??
