Bicycle Lock Recommendations

What bike is it?

For MAXIMUM security, recommended is Cable + ULock (Im sure you dont need to go that far though).

I use this Kyrptonite Cable lock.. and would trust my carbon frame would be secure with it. (mind you, i rarely ever let it out of my sight). https://www.kryptonitelock.com/produ...=1001&pid=1184

Lock up the rear wheel and frame, and if you want take the front wheel off.
If you buy a lock though, go to a bike shop and get a GOOD LOCK.
Those locks that are $10 at CDN tire, are $10 for a reason.
PLUS, Kryptonite puts insurance on their locks, so if your lock gets busted they will reimburse you a bit for your losses. (dont know how good they are with this, but thats what it said on the packaging ahaha...)

Yea, most will have it. Bow cycle has a good selection.

Cable lock works great, flexible and secure. If you're paranoid (or insecure area), just take your front wheel in to work with you. Most downtown buildings will have secure lock ups for bike and costs very little per month.

... and no man, even still, thats a nice bike. big chunk of change to spend on a bike.

.. and there are plenty of bicycle cages in most the major parkades downtown and other areas (ie. i know of one right beside the Central Library downtown).

I bring my bike into my office actually... got a pretty rad boss.

They can be opened with ballpoint pens.

The cheap ones yes...

But krypto locks and really any non cheapo u-lock is the best lock for your bike (even over cable locks)

I have a Kryptonite too. I think it's a New York. One of the yellow handle ones. Fuck Kryptonite makes some sturdy locks.

Don't forget to lock or remove your seat as well. I once had a seat stolen off my mountain bike, the cop said they take the seat and later come back at night for the rest of the bike as riding a bike without a seat is nearly impossible for longer distances and most bike owners would leave it and come back with a new seat. I walked my bike home that night, made me appreciate how great a bike is compared to walking, pure genius.

Another bike was stolen, I had the best Krypto lock on it and it was locked to a street sign. The bike thief simply removed the top of the sign (two bolts) and slid the bike up and off in the middle of the night. Cop said crackheads work the area and flip the bike for a few $$$. Funny thing is we bright minds sitting in a university had maybe thirty bikes parked on the same street, in the same fashion, and we did not put two and two together. Goes to show uni is no match for street smarts and a drug addiction. I was impressed really, and a felt a tad dumb at the same time.

I have given up on bike locks for any real sense of security, but that might just be me.

The locks this post refers to has a ROUND key, and yes, they were easily opened with a pen. If you get a u-lock with a "normal" straight key, they are more secure. I spent a number of years as a courier downtown, and I tried a lot of different locks, and the best one I found were the u-locks (straight-key). MEC sells ok ones, if you get a long u-lock, it will fit both wheels and your bike frame, as well as a post, or whatever you lock it up to. You don't need to lock your fork, no thief is dumb enough to bring tools and start dis-mantling your bike just to get a fork!
A bike lock is a lot like an alarm system on a car; if a thief knows it's there, they'll move on.

Good call on the U-Lock + Cable.

I don't know what MEC has, but Kryptonite, as most all bike shops, has a Kryptonite u-lock + cable combo... Might want to check it out.
I truly believe in Kryp locks personally, but that's.a huge bias on my part.

A lock is just a deterrent anyways. If they really wanted your bike... not much can stop them. Should be good enough for the bike racks in and around the DT area.

80 is for the orange tip or New Yorker lock, the u-lock and cable combo has a cheaper U-lock than the $80 one, I think the whole combo is $60-$80 actually..

But that $30 lock seems really dece.
At school I have a bike locker, definitely worth every penny if you have access to one. Means I have absolutely nothing to worry about.

3 year bump!

Looking for recommendations for a lock in the ~$30-$40 price range. Ideally would be a U-Lock + Cable combo.

Right now I'm comparing these 3 - any good or bad experiences?
Kryptonite Series 2 $41.90

Magnum 3039 $28.50

OnGuard Bulldog $35.96 + shipping (amazon.com only)

Not sure if I'm going overboard with a U-Lock, as I don't use my bike to commute and likely the longest my bike will ever go unattended is a couple hours during a lunch stop or grocery run. Would a cable lock suffice in Calgary / Banff?

edit: my bike isn't really anything flashy, better than department store but fairly low end for a bike shop, value is ~$600... but it is new/clean.

Hmm I could be wrong but I thought I saw the Bulldog ones at Sportchek? I guess if they want they can take your front or back wheel, lights, seat, bell, picnic basket :-).
